Health impacts of a scale-up of supervised injection services in a Canadian setting: an interrupted time series analysis

Mary Clare Kennedy et al.

Summary: The expansion of overdose prevention sites in Vancouver, Canada in December 2016 was associated with immediate and continuous increases in supervised injection service engagement, as well as immediate improvements in related health outcomes. And we just have to keep going: Task shifting and the production of burnout among overdose response workers with lived experience

Michelle Olding et al.

Summary: In North America, overdose response programs are increasingly shifting tasks to less specialized workers, particularly those with lived experience of drug use, to increase effectiveness and engagement. Despite reports of widespread burnout among frontline responders, little consideration has been given to the implications of task shifting on workers' wellbeing and service delivery. This study in Vancouver, Canada, found that workers at low-barrier supervised consumption sites commonly reported burnout due to the demanding nature of their work, limited economic security, and lack of opportunities for advancement. The devaluing and casualization of overdose response labor, along with structural vulnerabilities, are central to burnout among workers with lived experience, indicating a need for interventions beyond individual-level support to address these systemic issues.

The rise of illicit fentanyls, stimulants and the fourth wave of the opioid overdose crisis

Daniel Ciccarone

Summary: The review provides an update on the rising trend of illicit fentanyls, overdose risks, and treatment options, particularly focusing on the increasing use of synthetic opioids like fentanyl and its analogs in the US. Methamphetamine and cocaine-driven stimulant-related overdoses are also on the rise nationwide, contributing to the 'fourth wave' of high mortality involving these substances. The use of illicit fentanyls remains a major contributor to overdose deaths, and the increase in stimulant-related deaths seems to be connected to the ongoing opioid epidemic.

Flexible Coding of In-depth Interviews: A Twenty-first-century Approach

Nicole M. Deterding et al.

Summary: The qualitative coding procedures of grounded theory from the 1960s are limited by current technologies and may not fit well with contemporary sociological interview studies. QDA software provides flexibility in storing and analyzing electronic documents, offering more convenience than traditional methods. Proper data organization and analysis steps are needed to better utilize current technology in in-depth interview data analysis.
