Comparison of LiDAR- and UAV-derived data for landslide susceptibility mapping using Random Forest algorithm

Felicia Franca Pereira et al.

Summary: Earthquakes, extreme rainfall, or human activity can all lead to landslides, causing casualties and economic consequences. Landslide susceptibility mapping is an important technique for predicting such events, and this study compares maps generated by RF algorithm with LiDAR and UAV data. The results show that both models have high accuracy and AUC, with the LiDAR-based model being more accurate. The study also highlights the potential of UAV data in mapping landslide susceptibility on an intra-urban scale.

Monitoring Mining Surface Subsidence with Multi-Temporal Three-Dimensional Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Point Cloud

Xiaoyu Liu et al.

Summary: Long-term and high-intensity coal mining has caused serious surface subsidence and environmental problems. Surface subsidence monitoring is crucial for protecting the ecological environment and ensuring sustainable development in coal mining areas. Advances in surveying technology, such as the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and the structure from motion (SfM) method, have enabled the collection of high-resolution terrain data in complex or inaccessible environments. A quantitative analysis method based on three-dimensional point cloud was proposed in this study to assess ground subsidence and reveal its spatio-temporal characteristics.

A Comparative Assessment of Multi-Source Generation of Digital Elevation Models for Fluvial Landscapes Characterization and Monitoring

Pawel Sudra et al.

Summary: Imaging and measuring the Earth's relief using sensors on unmanned aerial vehicles is a promising method for remote sensing. This study assessed and compared the accuracy of remote sensing technologies in generating digital elevation models (DEMs) for riverscape characterization and fluvial monitoring. The researchers found that UAV-based LiDAR sensors were useful for geomorphological mapping and reached similar accuracies to airborne laser scanning (ALS) and better than digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP).

Improving the Spatial Accuracy of UAV Platforms Using Direct Georeferencing Methods: An Application for Steep Slopes

Mustafa Zeybek et al.

Summary: This study focuses on using image-based techniques such as structure from motion (SfM) to produce high-accuracy topographic maps using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and minimal surface measurements. Real-time kinematic (RTK) has been used to increase positional accuracy to 1-3 times the ground sampling distance (GSD). The study evaluates the post-processing kinematic (PPK) approach for achieving high positional accuracy with UAV image georeferencing and assesses the impact of different flight patterns and altitudes on the accuracy of the resulting topographic maps.

An Investigation of Ancient Water Collection and Storage Systems Near the Karahantepe Neolithic Site Using UAV and GIS

Nizar Polat

Summary: This study used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to investigate ancient water collection and storage systems near the Karahantepe Neolithic Site. The use of digital elevation models (DEMs) allowed for the examination of cisterns, pools, and channels in the region. Hydrological analysis provided a comprehensive understanding of water flow patterns. The findings suggested that the channels leading to cisterns followed a meandering slope and culminated in pools, possibly serving as sedimentation ponds. The study highlighted the benefits of utilizing UAV technology in archaeology and inferred that the water collection and storage system in the region was intentionally constructed by ancient civilizations.

Combined ground-based and UAS SfM-MVS approach for determination of geometric parameters of the large-scale industrial facility-Case study

Ludovit Kovanic et al.

Summary: The geometric parameters of large-scale machinery are checked using traditional geodetic and measuring methods. For a rotary kiln (RK), the focus is on determining its real longitudinal axis geometry and shell deformation. The geodetic methods employ total station (TS) or terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) for 3D coordinate measurements. In this research, these methods were used as ground-truth references to evaluate the SfM-MVS approach in 3D modeling and rotary kiln geometry derivation.

Image Mapping Accuracy Evaluation Using UAV with Standalone, Differential (RTK), and PPP GNSS Positioning Techniques in an Abandoned Mine Site

Hanjin Kim et al.

Summary: Global navigation satellite systems (GNSSs) provide a common positioning method, but standalone GNSS positioning can have significant errors, so real-time kinematic (RTK) correction and post-mission precise point positioning (PPP) processing are proposed. To evaluate geolocation accuracy, we compared results from standalone GNSS, RTK GNSS, and PPP processing of UAV images of an abandoned mine site. RTK GNSS had the best performance in camera location and image mapping evaluations, and PPP processing reduced errors compared to standalone GNSS. RTK GNSS is widely used for high accuracy positioning, while PPP processing is useful in situations where RTK GNSS is not feasible or available.
