Methods Combining Genomic and Epidemiological Data in the Reconstruction of Transmission Trees: A Systematic Review

Helene Duault et al.

Summary: In order to better understand transmission dynamics and select appropriate control measures, studies focus on identifying who-infected-whom in actual outbreaks. Different reconstruction methods exist, each with its own assumptions and types of data. Selecting a suitable method can be challenging.

Challenges and Opportunities for Global Genomic Surveillance Strategies in the COVID-19 Era

Ted Ling-Hu et al.

Summary: Global SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance efforts provide critical data for clinical care and public health, but current limitations in each step of the surveillance pipeline compromise its effectiveness. These limitations include biases in sampling methods, lack of standardization in genotyping strategies and data processing, limitations and inconsistencies in clinical and demographic data collection, and delays in implementing genomic surveillance data in public health.

The evolving SARS-CoV-2 epidemic in Africa: Insights from rapidly expanding genomic surveillance

Houriiyah Tegally et al.

Summary: Investment in SARS-CoV-2 sequencing in Africa has led to a significant increase in the number of sequences available for tracking the pandemic on the continent, surpassing 100,000 genomes. The study highlights the advantages of local sequencing in terms of faster turnaround times and routine surveillance. The findings underscore the heterogeneous nature of the pandemic and shed light on the dispersal dynamics of variants of concern in Africa.

Marburg virus disease: A deadly rare virus is coming

Fang Zhao et al.

Summary: Two cases of the deadly Marburg virus have been reported in Ghana, which could be another global virus alert following COVID-19 and novel monkeypox. There is currently no vaccine or treatment available for Marburg virus disease, which has a high mortality rate similar to Ebola. It is concerning that globalization may contribute to the global transmission of this virus, just like what happened with COVID-19. This study provides a brief summary of the etiology, epidemiology, and clinical symptoms of the Marburg virus, as well as vaccine development and experimental treatments, in order to prevent and control the virus.

Genetic Variability of the Monkeypox Virus Clade IIb B.1

Fabio Scarpa et al.

Summary: Monkeypox is a globally widespread disease, but with regional variations. The genetic variability of the monkeypox virus remains relatively stable, with a slow population growth rate. Continuous monitoring is necessary to detect any changes in its genetic composition.
