Epidemiological and genetic evaluation of HEV in swine slaughtered in Sicily region (Italy)

Lorusso Patrizio et al.

Summary: This study assessed the presence of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) in liver samples and rectal swabs of slaughtered pigs in Sicily. The results showed that 17.5% of the liver samples and 3.7% of the rectal swabs tested positive for HEV. These findings indicate a potential transmission of HEV to humans through close contact with pig breeders, veterinarians, slaughterhouse personnel, and pork meat consumption. Further studies are needed to understand the spread of HEV in pigs and humans in Sicily.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in wild boars

Angela Fanelli et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis provides a summary of the prevalence of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) antibodies and HEV RNA in wild boar, a common game species worldwide. The study found that the seroprevalence of HEV-specific antibodies in wild boar was 28%, while the prevalence of HEV RNA was 8%. Variations in prevalence were observed based on sample type and geographical region.

Occurrence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in Calabrian wild boars

Patrizio Lorusso et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the occurrence and genetic variability of HEV in wild boars. It found a prevalence of 26.7% in wild boar liver samples, all identified as HEV-3c subtype. Further research is needed to investigate virus viability and its link to human seroprevalence.

Hepatitis E Virus (HEV): Identification of Subtypes 3b and 3m in Wild Boar Population in Liguria Region, Italy

Roberta Battistini et al.

Summary: Wild boars are important natural reservoirs for the zoonotic transmission of hepatitis E virus (HEV) worldwide. This study investigated the prevalence and geographic circulation of HEV among wild boar populations in the Ligurian region of Italy. The results showed an increase in the percentage of HEV-positive wild boars in the last two years, as well as different circulations of identified subtypes across the territory.

Hepatitis E virus in professionally exposed: A reason for concern?

Anna Mrzljak et al.

Summary: The zoonotic risk of hepatitis E virus is well established, with varying seroprevalence rates and underdiagnosed infections. Close contact with animal reservoirs is associated with higher infection rates, highlighting the importance of preventive measures such as hand hygiene and thermal processing of food. A One-Health approach, including vaccination against zoonotic genotypes and swine, is recommended for optimal health outcomes.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 diversity: Identification of a novel HEV subtype in wild boar in Central Italy

Summary: The number of autochthonous cases of hepatitis E has significantly increased in Europe, primarily due to foodborne infections caused by HEV genotypes in pork and wild boar meat. A study in Central Italy found HEV infection in wild boar tissues, revealing a new subtype, HEV-3n, originating in Italy.

Summary: This study detected HEV virus in shellfish sold in the Apulia region of Italy, with two samples testing positive, accounting for 0.89%. This is the first detection of HEV in retail mussels in the region, highlighting the potential role of shellfish as a vehicle for viral pathogens transmission.

Hepatitis E Virus Occurrence in Pigs Slaughtered in Italy

Eleonora Chelli et al.

Summary: Hepatitis E is recognized as an emerging zoonotic disease in Europe, caused by an RNA virus transmitted through foodborne routes. The study investigated the prevalence of HEV-positive pigs during slaughtering, with results showing that the virus mainly resides in the liver rather than muscles, and the age of animals affects the positivity rate.

Hepatitis E Virus RNA Presence in Wild Boar Carcasses at Slaughterhouses in Italy

Summary: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a globally distributed waterborne and foodborne pathogen responsible for acute hepatitis in humans. In Europe and industrialised countries, the disease has mainly spread due to consumption of raw or undercooked meat and seafood. Health education programmes for hunters and consumers are essential to limit the diffusion of the pathogen to humans.
