Nucleopolyhedrovirus Coocclusion Technology: A New Concept in the Development of Biological Insecticides

Trevor Williams et al.

Summary: This article describes a new approach for the development of nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV)-based insecticides, utilizing the collective transmission and genotypic diversity of these viruses. By selecting, mixing, coinfecting, and cooccluding variants, highly pathogenic virus preparations for pest control can be produced. Additionally, this technology can be adapted to produce interspecific mixtures of viruses for controlling specific lepidopteran pests on particular crops, as long as a shared host species is available for virus production.

First Evidence of CpGV Resistance of Codling Moth in the USA

Jiangbin Fan et al.

Summary: Codling moth is a significant pest in apple, pear, and walnut orchards worldwide. The study found that Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV), which is commonly used for codling moth control, was ineffective against a resistant codling moth colony, WA3, in Washington State, USA. However, new CpGV preparations were successful in infecting larvae from the resistant colony. The study highlights the need to monitor and develop strategies to prevent the emergence of codling moth populations with CpGV resistance.

Differential insecticidal properties of Spodoptera frugiperda multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus isolates against corn-strain and rice-strain fall armyworm, and genomic analysis of three isolates

Holly J. R. Popham et al.

Summary: The study assessed the virulence of several SfMNPV isolates towards larvae of both corn-strain and rice-strain fall armyworm, identifying isolates with superior properties for control of fall armyworm. This adds to our knowledge of the genetics of SfMNPV.

Genomic diversity in a population of Spodoptera frugiperda nucleopolyhedrovirus

Tomas Masson et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-throughput sequencing to explore the genomic diversity within an isolate of SfMNPV for the first time, revealing that coding regions with higher genetic diversity may be associated with oral infectivity or unknown functions. Evolutionary studies provided evidence of diversifying selection acting on sf29, a putative collagenase that could contribute to the oral infectivity of SfMNPV. Overall, these results deepen our understanding of the coevolution between SfMNPV and the fall armyworm and enhance the potential applicability of this virus as a biological control agent.
