Simulations showed that low testing rates and spatiotemporal biases delay detection of new variants and lead to unreliable estimates of variant prevalence. Increase in wider access to diagnostics can enable timely detection and reliable estimation of variant prevalence, improving the performance of global SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance programs.
