Expanding Acutuncus: Phylogenetics and morphological analyses reveal a considerably wider distribution for this tardigrade genus

Matteo Vecchi et al.

Summary: The Antarctic endemicity of the Acutuncus genus was refuted with the discovery of Acutuncus mariae Zawierucha, 2020 in the Svalbard archipelago. Through integrated analysis of Acutuncus populations from the UK and Italy, as well as a population of Acutuncus antarcticus near its type locality, the climatic and geographic range of the Acutuncus genus was expanded. These findings led to the re-evaluation of Acutuncus morphological diagnoses and its classification in the newly proposed monotypic family Acutuncidae fam. nov. Two new Acutuncus species were described from Europe: Acutuncus mecnuffi sp. nov. and Acutuncus giovanniniae sp. nov.

Integrative taxonomy reveals new, widely distributed tardigrade species of the genus Paramacrobiotus (Eutardigrada: Macrobiotidae)

Pushpalata Kayastha et al.

Summary: A new species, Paramacrobiotus gadabouti sp. nov., was discovered and described using morphological, morphometric, and genetic data. The species belongs to the Parmacrobiotus richtersi group and exhibits richtersi-type eggs with cap-like structures at the ends. It is most similar to Pam. alekseevi, Pam. filipi, and Pam. garynahi, but differs in egg morphology and morphometrics. Unlike other species in the group, Paramacrobiotus gadabouti sp. nov. is a parthenogenetic species with a wider distribution, supporting the hypothesis of 'everything is everywhere' for tardigrades.

Differential expression profiling of heat stressed tardigrades reveals major shift in the transcriptome

Ricardo Cardoso Neves et al.

Summary: Tardigrades are known for their extreme stress tolerance, but they appear to be vulnerable to high temperatures. This study analyzes transcriptome data from heat-stressed tardigrades to understand the molecular processes affected by high temperatures. The findings reveal significant changes in transcription, metabolic adjustments, and preparation for encystment and diapause.

Airborne environmental DNA for terrestrial vertebrate community monitoring

Christina Lynggaard et al.

Summary: Biodiversity monitoring at the community scale is critical for understanding the impacts of environmental and human activities on natural ecosystems. This study demonstrates that airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) can be a powerful tool for studying and monitoring terrestrial vertebrate communities. The researchers collected air samples from different locations in a zoo and used eDNA analysis to detect diverse vertebrate species. They found that the distance to the sampling device and animal biomass influenced the detection probability.

Summary: The phylogenetic position of the enigmatic Antarctic tardigrade genus Ramajendas was clarified using specimens from King George Island, Antarctic. It was revealed to have a close affinity to the superfamily Isohypsibioidea, prompting the erection of a new family Ramajendidae fam. nov. A detailed morphological description of the available specimens was provided.

The Macrobiotus ariekammensis species complex provides evidence for parallel evolution of claw elongation in macrobiotid tardigrades

Daniel Stec et al.

Summary: The recent integrative revision of the family Macrobiotidae showed that the genus Macrobiotus and its complex morphological evolution are monophyletic. In this study, three Macrobiotus populations with extraordinary elongated claw morphology were analyzed. Despite their distinctiveness, these populations were not established as a new genus, but grouped into the Macrobiotus ariekammensis species complex. Furthermore, it was found that macrobiotid tardigrades inhabiting cold environments have experienced rapid parallel evolution of long claws. The validity of suppressing the genus Xerobiotus was also discussed.

Extreme freeze-tolerance in cryophilic tardigrades relies on controlled ice formation but does not involve significant change in transcription

Ask Mobjerg et al.

Summary: Tardigrades, particularly R. varieornatus, exhibit extreme freeze-tolerance by controlling extracellular freezing. The freeze-tolerance does not involve differential gene expression but may rely on the synthesis of cryoprotectants and cold-active enzymes. Controlled ice formation and cooling rate are crucial for post-freeze recovery of R. varieornatus.

eDNA in subterranean ecosystems: Applications, technical aspects, and future prospects

Mattia Sacco et al.

Summary: Monitoring of biota is crucial for ecosystem assessment and conservation. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding provides a reliable molecular approach for biodiversity assessments. However, eDNA-based studies targeting subterranean ecosystems are still uncommon due to their inaccessibility and cryptic nature. Recent advances in genetic and genomic analyses offer a promising framework for exploring subterranean biodiversity and ecology.

The biodiversity effect of reduced tillage on soil microbiota

Tobias Guldberg Froslev et al.

Summary: The study found that reducing tillage significantly affects the composition of soil communities, with richness weakly correlated to tillage and more influenced by sample collection location (center or edge). Although no-till soil communities show higher similarity to oldfields and semi-natural grasslands, their contribution to biodiversity conservation is negligible, suggesting that restoration on set aside land may have a greater impact on conservation.

Phylogeny Estimation Given Sequence Length Heterogeneity

Vladimir Smirnov et al.

Summary: The study compared two basic approaches for estimating trees on large datasets, finding that using UPP to align sequences and RAxML to compute a tree on the alignment provided the best accuracy, outperforming trees computed using phylogenetic placement methods, particularly in cases of substantial sequence length heterogeneity and high rates of evolution. Additionally, it was found that FastTree had poor accuracy on alignments containing fragmentary sequences.

Multi-marker DNA metabarcoding reflects tardigrade diversity in different habitats

Lasse Topstad et al.

Summary: Tardigrades, often overlooked in ecological and environmental surveys, are potential candidates for biomonitoring programs due to their wide distribution and presence in various ecosystems. Utilizing a multi-marker metabarcoding approach on environmental DNA can help overcome the challenge of tedious and time-consuming sampling of these minute animals. The study found that DNA metabarcoding was more effective in detecting tardigrade species diversity and community composition compared to morphology-based methods, although it was less reliable for litter samples.

However, research on the evolutionary history of the limnoterrestrial water bear genus Milnesium reveals that their populations are limited by geographic restrictions, with long distance dispersal being rare.

The structure of tardigrade communities at fine spatial scales in an Andean Polylepis forest

Balbina P. L. Ramsay et al.

Summary: Little is known about distribution patterns and mechanisms of micrometazoan organisms at different spatial scales across diverse environments. In a high-elevation Polylepis forest in northern Ecuador, fine-scale structure of tardigrades was explored, revealing differences in composition between host taxa related to host architecture or chemistry. Tardigrade occupancy, richness, and abundance varied considerably between samples, with over 50 samples estimated to assess tardigrade taxon richness in the forest habitat. Fine-scale environmental differences, rather than physical distance, were found to be more important in determining tardigrade composition, highlighting the need for standardized, comprehensive sampling of terrestrial tardigrades at fine scales before broader comparisons at coarser geographical scales can be made.
