The relative roles of multiple drivers on benthic ciliate communities in an intertidal zone

Jiawei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of natural gradients, human induced disturbance, and biotic interactions on intertidal biodiversity in Zhejiang, China. The results showed that sediment grain size was the most important factor affecting alpha diversity and community composition. Human induced eutrophication had significant effects on phylogenetic alpha diversity and community composition. Biotic interactions had relatively small effects on ciliate communities.

New contributions to the Cyrtophoria ciliates (Protista, Ciliophora): Establishment of new taxa and phylogenetic analyses using two ribosomal genes

Congcong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the taxonomy and biodiversity of periphytic ciliates collected from coastal waters of China. Two new species, Derouxella lembodes and Cyrtophoron multivacuolatum, were described, and the poorly known species Cyrtophoron apsheronica was redefined. Morphological classification and phylogenetic analyses revealed the position of Derouxella as an intermediate between Hartmannulidae and Dysteriidae. The study provides important insights into the classification and biodiversity of periphytic ciliates.

New considerations of the systematics of the family Holophryidae (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Prostomatea) with a description of Holophrya paradiscolor sp. nov. and a redescription of Pelagothrix plancticola

Limin Jiang et al.

Summary: The diversity of the poorly known family Holophryidae was investigated in this study. Two holophryid ciliates, Pelagothrix plancticola and Holophrya paradiscolor sp. nov., were isolated from freshwater ponds in Qingdao, China. Their morphology was described through live observation and staining, while their molecular phylogeny was analyzed based on SSU rRNA gene sequences. The study also provided an improved diagnosis of P. plancticola and described the distinguishing features of H. paradiscolor sp. nov. Additionally, the habitats and geographic distribution of holophryids were reviewed.

Paleoreconstructions of ciliate communities reveal long-term ecological changes in temperate lakes

Cecilia Barouillet et al.

Summary: Ciliate communities in lakes have experienced a decline in beta-diversity in recent times, especially in lowland lakes facing local human pressures. Changes in benthic ciliates are consistent with the increase in deep water anoxia. Sedimentary DNA analysis proves the potential of ciliates as new paleoindicators, offering insights into long-term changes in aquatic ecosystems.

Widespread Occurrence of Two Planktonic Ciliate Species (Urotricha, Prostomatida) Originating from High Mountain Lakes

Bettina Sonntag et al.

Summary: The genus Urotricha, widely distributed in freshwater environments, has been described mainly based on morphology. This study employed an integrative approach, combining morphology, molecular phylogeny, and biogeography, to investigate two Urotricha species isolated from high mountain lakes in Austria. Results suggest that these cryptic species are well adapted to their harsh environment.

Changes of the Freshwater Microbial Community Structure and Assembly Processes during Different Sample Storage Conditions

Yunfeng Wang et al.

Summary: The storage conditions of samples can affect microbial diversity and community patterns. This study found that the dynamics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities were different under different storage conditions. Eukaryotic microbial communities changed at a faster rate during storage, while prokaryotic microbial communities remained stable within the first 12 hours of room-temperature storage.

Phylogeny of the anaerobic ciliate genus Sonderia (Protista: Ciliophora: Plagiopylea), including the description of three novel species and a brief revision of the genus

Ran Li et al.

Summary: Anaerobic protists, especially ciliates, are important components of anoxic or hypoxic environments, but their diversity is often underestimated. In this study, three new species of the poorly studied genus Sonderia were discovered and investigated using microscopic observations and SSU rRNA gene sequencing methods.

Biodiversity of freshwater ciliates (Protista, Ciliophora) in the Lake Weishan Wetland, China: the state of the art

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: Ciliates play a critical role in the energy flow and material circulation within aquatic ecosystems. However, studies on the taxonomy and biodiversity of freshwater ciliates, particularly in Chinese wetlands, are limited. A project to investigate the freshwater ciliates of Lake Weishan Wetland in Shandong Province was initiated in 2019. The findings to date indicate a high morphological diversity of ciliates, with 187 species identified, including several that are potentially new to science. A comprehensive database including morphological data, gene sequences, microscope slide specimens, and a DNA bank has been established. This study provides valuable insights into the previously underestimated ciliate species diversity in Lake Weishan Wetland.

Spatial distribution of planktonic ciliates in the western Pacific Ocean: along the transect from Shenzhen (China) to Pohnpei (Micronesia)

Hungchia Huang et al.

Summary: Planktonic ciliates are major consumers in pelagic ecosystems, playing pivotal roles in the transfer of matter and energy in the microbial loop. This study investigated the species composition and distribution patterns of ciliates from off-shore to open ocean along a transect from Shenzhen to Pohnpei, with the major driving factors identified as silicate and pigmented nanoflagellates. It highlights the necessity of using techniques to reveal community composition at higher taxonomic resolutions in future ciliate studies.
