Summary: This study investigates the effect of coconut coir as a feed supplement on the rumen microbiome of cattle using metagenomic sequencing. The results show that the microbiome does alter after feeding coir and suggest that coconut coir can be used as feed for cattle.

Evaluating the Prevalence of Foodborne Pathogens in Livestock Using Metagenomics Approach

Hyeri Kim et al.

Summary: Food safety is a critical global health issue caused by foodborne pathogens in contaminated food. Bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus, Campylobacter, Bacillus, Vibrio, Yersinia, and Clostridium are common causes of foodborne illnesses. This study analyzed the microbial communities in fecal samples from cattle, chicken, and pig, revealing differences in microbial diversity and the presence of various potential pathogens in livestock feces. Such findings may assist in controlling the spread of foodborne pathogens in farm environments.

Characterisation of the rumen resistome in Spanish dairy cattle

Adrian Lopez-Catalina et al.

Summary: Through sequencing ruminal samples from 416 Holstein dairy cows in 14 Spanish farms, we identified a large number of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the rumen, with the most prevalent ARGs related to treating common diseases in dairy cattle such as mastitis, metritis, and lameness. The relative abundance of bacteriophages was positively correlated with the ARGs, indicating that the host partially controls the abundance of these genes by influencing the rumen pH and other physiological traits.
