Decreased putamen activation in balancing goal-directed and habitual behavior in binge eating disorder

B. Hartogsveld et al.

Summary: This study found that activity in the ACC, insula, and OFC is associated with the balance between goal-directed and habitual behavior in healthy controls. While stress and BED did not modulate this balance, BED participants showed smaller differences in putamen activation compared to HCs.

Inhibitory Control Development: A Network Neuroscience Perspective

Weixi Kang et al.

Summary: Inhibition, as a core executive function, plays a crucial role in human development. Recent neuroscience research has investigated the neural mechanisms of inhibitory control, leading to a controversy between modulatory and network perspectives. This systematic review examines the developmental mechanisms of inhibitory control and neurodevelopmental diseases associated with inhibitory dysfunctions, providing evidence against the modulatory perspective and supporting the network perspective.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on response inhibition in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using the stop-signal task. The results supported the hypothesis of impaired response inhibition in OCD, with older individuals showing greater deficits in inhibitory control compared to younger individuals.

The relationship between attention and avoidance coping in anorexia nervosa: functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Tomomi Noda et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown that patients with anorexia nervosa exhibit attentional control difficulties and high avoidance coping. These difficulties are associated with decreased deactivation in regions of the brain responsible for internal mental processing, leading to challenges in maintaining attention on external events and contributing to the frequent use of avoidance coping strategies in anorexia nervosa.

Cytoarchitectonics of the Rolandic operculum: morphofunctional ponderings

Lazaros C. Triarhou

Summary: The article discusses Constantin von Economo's interest in the cellular structure of the human cerebral cortex and highlights his 1930 paper on the cytoarchitectonics of the Rolandic operculum. It further explores morphofunctional aspects of the human opercular cortex from a modern perspective and its clinical relevance to language dysfunctions, the operculum syndrome, and epilepsy.

Prefrontal Responses during Proactive and Reactive Inhibition Are Differentially Impacted by Stress in Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa

Margaret L. Westwater et al.

Summary: This study found that women with bulimia nervosa (BN) had reduced proactive inhibition, while prefrontal responses were increased in both the anorexia nervosa bingeing/purging subtype (AN-BP) and BN groups. Despite distinct stress-induced changes in frontal activity during inhibition tasks, task performance was unaffected by stress, indicating that stress does not lead to failures of inhibitory control as a comprehensive explanation for loss-of-control eating.

The when and where of the interplay between attentional capture and response inhibition during a Go/NoGo variant

Joseph P. Happer et al.

Summary: Inhibitory control relies on integrated functions across neural networks, which are better captured using aMEG that combines MEG with MRI. Experimental results show that visually salient stimuli can facilitate response withholding on certain trials and hinder responding to others, highlighting the interplay between attention and inhibitory processes. The study emphasizes the role of neural synchrony in theta band in underlying inhibitory control and attentional processes.

Linda Kwakkenbos et al.

Summary: Randomised controlled trials are increasingly conducted using cohorts or routinely collected data, and the CONSORT has introduced an extension to improve reporting quality in the long term. The extension, developed through a sequential approach including a Delphi survey, consensus meeting, and checklist piloting, includes modified items from the CONSORT 2010 statement and new items. Reporting items with explanations and examples are provided to highlight specific considerations in trials conducted using cohorts or routinely collected data.

Distinct patterns of prefrontal cortical disengagement during inhibitory control in addiction: A meta-analysis based on population characteristics

Thang M. Le et al.

Summary: Prefrontal cortical dysfunctions underlying inhibitory control deficits in addiction are complex and likely dependent on population characteristics. A meta-analysis on brain activations during response inhibition in addicted individuals revealed hypoactivation of specific areas in active drug addicts, particularly in nicotine users. Cognitive performance deficits were also associated with decreased activation in certain brain regions. Furthermore, those with behavioral addictions showed higher activation in certain brain regions. Normalization of hypofrontality following substance use cessation highlights the benefits of abstinence in restoring cerebral functions.
