Identification of the energy contributions associated with wall-attached eddies and very-large-scale motions in the near-neutral atmospheric surface layer through wind LiDAR measurements

Matteo Puccioni et al.

Summary: Recent studies have confirmed the coexistence of wall-attached eddies and very-large-scale motions in wall-bounded flows. The statistical features of the eddies are predicted through Townsend's attached-eddy hypothesis, and the presence of wall-attached eddies is linked to an inverse-power-law region in the streamwise velocity energy spectra. In this study, the contributions of wall-attached eddies and VLSMs to the streamwise velocity energy in a near-neutral atmospheric surface layer are investigated.

Review of Wind-Wave Coupling Models for Large-Eddy Simulation of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Georgios Deskos et al.

Summary: This review article discusses existing wind-wave coupling models and parameterizations for large-eddy simulation of the marine atmospheric boundary layer. The models are categorized into wave-phase-averaged and wave-phase-resolved models, and their implementation, validity, and computational efficiency are discussed. Emphasis is placed on their applicability in offshore wind energy problems, with a review of laboratory-scale and field-measurement databases for model validation provided. Knowledge gaps in modeling and computational challenges ahead are also addressed.

Offshore wind farm global blockage measured with scanning lidar

Joerge Schneemann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global blockage effect of a large offshore wind farm using long range Doppler wind lidar in the German North Sea. Results show a decrease in wind speed at transition piece height under stable atmosphere when turbines operate at high thrust coefficients, indicating global blockage. However, no wind speed deficit is found under unstable atmosphere conditions.

Spectral correction of turbulent energy damping on wind lidar measurements due to spatial averaging

Matteo Puccioni et al.

Summary: The continuous advancements in pulsed wind lidar technology have enabled precise turbulence measurements within the atmospheric boundary layer. By reversing the turbulent energy damping with a low-pass filter, it is possible to correct the lidar measurements effectively. The order of the low-pass filter has minimal effects on the second-order statistics of wind velocity, while the cutoff wavenumber plays a significant role in spectral correction.

LiSBOA (LiDAR Statistical Barnes Objective Analysis) for optimal design of lidar scans and retrieval of wind statistics - Part 1: Theoretical framework

Stefano Letizia et al.

Summary: LiSBOA is a statistical Barnes objective analysis method proposed for the optimal design of lidar scans and retrieval of velocity statistical moments. It is validated and characterized through a Monte Carlo approach, providing guidelines for optimal design and efficient application. It also guides the selection of smoothing parameters and the total number of iterations for the Barnes scheme.

LiSBOA (LiDAR Statistical Barnes Objective Analysis) for optimal design of lidar scans and retrieval of wind statistics - Part 2: Applications to lidar measurements of wind turbine wakes

Stefano Letizia et al.

Summary: LiDAR Statistical Barnes Objective Analysis (LiSBOA) is a method for the optimal design of lidar scans and calculations of statistical moments of the velocity field, useful for wind resource assessment and diagnostic surveys for wind farms. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of LiSBOA in capturing complex flow features and optimizing lidar azimuthal step.
