Scale-dependent effects of species diversity on aboveground biomass and productivity in a subtropical broadleaved forest on Mt. Huangshan

Lei Xie et al.

Summary: The relationship between species diversity and biomass/productivity is a significant scientific question in ecology. Although positive, negative, and neutral relationships have been identified, it remains unclear whether scale-dependent effects affect aboveground biomass and productivity. Biotic and abiotic factors, such as elevation, also play a role in mediating the relationship between species diversity and ecosystem functioning.

Local and species contribution to the beta diversity and rarity of riparian spider community of the Ganga River, India

Kritish De et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between LCBD, SCBD, and rarity of spider community in the riparian habitat of the Ganga River. The LCBD of the spider community was significantly correlated with total species richness but not with rare species richness. Spider species with intermediate occurrence contributed more to SCBD values than species with high and low occurrence. The rarity index of spider species had a significant relationship with SCBD values.

Relationship between species richness, taxonomic distinctness, functional diversity, and local contribution to β diversity and effects of habitat disturbance in the riparian spider community of the Ganga River, India

Kritish De et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of habitat disturbance on taxonomic distinctness, functional diversity, and local contribution to beta diversity of spider community in the Ganga River. The results showed significant relationships between habitat disturbance and the indices of taxonomic distinctness, functional diversity, and local contribution. Anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, garbage dump, human settlement, and created embankment influenced the spider community's taxonomic distinctness, functional diversity, and local contribution.

Owl-mediated diploendozoochorous seed dispersal increases dispersal distance and supports seedling establishment

Laura Godo et al.

Summary: Seed dispersal is crucial for the survival of plant populations, and zoochory is a widely observed method that enables long-distance dispersal through animals. Secondary seed dispersal by far-ranging raptors, such as barn owls, plays a role in colonizing new habitats. In this study, we found that barn owls primarily dispersed seeds through herbivorous Microtus arvalis, indicating the importance of habitats with abundant small mammals. Furthermore, the remains of prey enhanced seedling establishment, suggesting the potential of barn owl-mediated seed dispersal to increase dispersal distance and seed exchange between habitat types.

Pollinator enhancement in agriculture: comparing sown flower strips, hedges and sown hedge herb layers in apple orchards

Vivien von Koenigsloew et al.

Summary: The study found that perennial flower strips were most effective in enhancing wild bee diversity at the edges of conventional apple orchards, while hedgerows also played a role. Additionally, flower-rich hedgerows can complement flower strips by extending the flowering period and increasing connectivity of pollinator habitat in agricultural landscapes.

Spiders as bio-indicators of habitat disturbance in the riparian zone of the Ganga river: a preliminary study

Kritish De et al.

Summary: Bio-indicators, such as spiders, can be used to assess the condition of freshwater environments, with certain species identified as indicators of varying levels of disturbance. This study found that eight spider species can indicate very low disturbed sites and one species can indicate low disturbed sites along the banks of the Ganga River.

Resilient dragons: Exploring Odonata communities in an urbanization gradient

Catalina M. Suarez-Tovar et al.

Summary: This study found higher damselfly species richness and abundance in sites with low urbanization compared to sites with high urbanization, with no significant difference for dragonflies. Dragonfly species richness and abundance were positively correlated with waste percentage and macrophyte cover, and negatively correlated with dissolved solids in water.

Estimating discharge of the Ganga River from satellite altimeter data

Atul Kumar Rai et al.

Summary: This study estimated discharge in different reaches of the Ganga River in India using water level data from multiple satellite altimeter missions. By establishing stage-discharge rating curves, monthly discharge of the river was estimated based on the altimeter water level. The analysis showed a good agreement between estimated discharge and in-situ measurements, indicating the effectiveness of the method.

Sampling efficiency of a protocol to measure Odonata diversity in tropical streams

Joana Darc Batista et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the efficiency of sampling protocol for Odonata, finding that sampling at noon, on a 100-meter transect, with at least two samplings in the same location, achieved the best results, supporting procedures commonly adopted by many studies. While there was no significant difference in species composition between different treatments, some methodological flaws were highlighted when using this protocol for specific Odonata groups.

A matter of suborder: are Zygoptera and Anisoptera larvae influenced by riparian vegetation in Neotropical Savanna streams?

Larissa F. R. Silva et al.

Summary: Initial Odonata larval distributions are influenced by adult females at oviposition; post-oviposition, larvae are affected by environmental conditions. Different riparian preferences of Zygoptera and Anisoptera larvae are influenced by canopy shading, temperature range, and habitat heterogeneity.phasis on maintaining riparian canopy cover for maintaining richness of Zygoptera larvae.
