Wide gap brazing using Ni-B-Si and Ni-B-Si-Cr-Fe filler metals: Microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties

H. Alinaghian et al.

Summary: The microstructure, shear strength, and stress rupture time of Inconel 738LC joined by wide gap brazing with low-melting alloys were studied. The amount of the low-melting alloys and their composition significantly affected the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints. The B1 samples with higher amounts of g/Ni3B showed higher shear strength and longer stress rupture time than the B2 samples with more Cr-rich borides.

Quantification of intermetallic phases in transient liquid phase-bonded Inconel617/MBF30 via image processing

Hyeon Jeong Park et al.

Summary: In this study, an image processing method was developed to quantitatively identify MoxBy and Mox1Crx2By phases on the joints between Inconel617 and MBF30, and an image processing algorithm was developed based on segmentation to classify the distributed phases from the regions of the base metal. The validity of the algorithm was evaluated by confirming the existence of the phases from the EPMA maps and directly verified by TEM and XRD analyses. The effects of the transient liquid phase bonding temperature on the widths of the distributed phases were quantitatively analyzed.

Microstructural characterization of TLP bonded joints of Mar-M247 superalloys with Ni-Cr-B interlayer

Yi Zhang et al.

Summary: TLP bonding using Ni-Cr-B amorphous interlayer was successfully applied to join Mar-M247 superalloy at 1230°C for 5 minutes. The microstructure of the bonded joints consisting of non-isothermal solidified zone, isothermal solidified zone, and diffusion affected zone was investigated. The results showed the presence of M23(C,B)6 eutectic phase, γ/γ' matrix, and randomly dispersed MC carbides. The microhardness of the bonding joint was also analyzed.

Ultrasonic elastography for nondestructive evaluation of dissimilar material joints

Yuqi Jin et al.

Summary: The use of dissimilar material joints or multilayered metals is increasing in the manufacturing industry to meet the demand for multifunctional materials. Understanding the mechanical, thermal, or electrical properties of these materials requires investigating lattice mismatch and utilizing techniques like nanoindentation and elastographic mapping. Friction stir welding is an effective method for obtaining dissimilar joints between different metals, and dynamic bulk modulus elastographic mapping provides a non-invasive technique for inspecting bulk metallurgic elastic modulus.

Effect of Homogenization on Metallurgical Structure of Nicrofer 5520 (IN-617) Superalloy Joints Diffusion-Brazed Using a Ni-Cr-Si-B Interlayer

Ali Nasajpour et al.

Summary: This study aimed to achieve a microstructure in diffusion-brazed Nicrofer 5520 superalloy joints that is most similar to the base metal. The results showed that increasing the holding time during the homogenization treatment led to a more uniform distribution of elements and a closer chemical composition to the base metal in the joint area. Additionally, the amount and volume fraction of precipitates in the diffusion-affected zone decreased with increasing holding time. After 18 hours of homogenization treatment, the diffusion-affected zone disappeared and only fine precipitates of nickel-rich silicide and carbide remained at the boundary.

Joining dental biomaterials of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and cp-Ti using transient liquid phase bonding: Metallurgical and mechanical assessment

S. Vazirian et al.

Summary: The choice of manufacturing process is crucial for producing flawless medical devices, and transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding is one of the best processes for achieving superior physical and mechanical properties. This study investigated the effect of bonding time on the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of joints using an ultra-thin Cu interlayer. The results showed that increasing the holding time improved the mechanical properties of the joint and changed the failure mode and fracture path.

Effect of diffusion brazing time on microstructure, isothermal solidification completion and microhardness distribution during joining of Nicrofer 5520 superalloy using a liquated Ni-Cr-B interlayer

Ali Nasajpour et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of time on the microstructural evolution, element distribution, precipitated phases, and microhardness of diffusion brazed Nicrofer 5520 superalloy using a BNi-9 interlayer was investigated. The results showed that an appropriate holding time led to complete isothermal solidification, lower density of precipitated phases, and more uniform microhardness.

Diffusion brazing of Inconel 617 and 321 stainless steel by using AMS 4772 Ag interlayer

M. Paidar et al.

Summary: The diffusion brazing of Inconel 617 and AISI 321 stainless steel with a 50 µm thick AMS 4772 Ag interlayer at 750°C resulted in void-free joints, with longer holding times leading to a more uniform reaction layer. A joint brazed for 60 minutes had the highest shear strength of 322.9 MPa and a 26% improvement over the joint brazed for 30 minutes.
