On the Uncertainty Induced by Pedotransfer Functions in Terrestrial Biosphere Modeling

Athanasios Paschalis et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of uncertainties in using different pedotransfer functions on ecosystem dynamics. The results show that these uncertainties can affect both hydrological and vegetation dynamics, especially in water-limited ecosystems. The uncertainties in evapotranspiration, plant productivity, and vegetation structure are around 10% at annual time scales, while uncertainties in runoff and groundwater recharge are one order of magnitude larger.

Consistent responses of vegetation gas exchange to elevated atmospheric CO2 emerge from heuristic and optimization models

Stefano Manzoni et al.

Summary: The decrease in stomatal conductance and increase in leaf area under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration lead to a reduction in leaf-level transpiration rate while having little effect on canopy-level transpiration. Both models predict an increase in leaf and canopy-level CO2 assimilation, with amplified CO2 fertilization effects at the canopy level due to enhanced leaf area. The increase in vapour pressure deficit under warmer conditions is expected to decrease the sensitivity of gas exchange to atmospheric CO2 concentration in both models.

Integrating the evidence for a terrestrial carbon sink caused by increasing atmospheric CO2

Anthony P. Walker et al.

Summary: Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration has the potential to enhance plant growth and contribute to a global terrestrial carbon sink, slowing down the rate of climate change. However, the complexity of ecosystem responses and interactions with other global change factors make it challenging to determine the exact impact of CO2 on the climate.

Assessment of CMIP6 Performance and Projected Temperature and Precipitation Changes Over South America

Mansour Almazroui et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of CMIP6 GCMs over South America and finds that they capture the main climate characteristics well, but exhibit varying skill in the spatiotemporal distribution of precipitation and temperature. Future projections suggest decreasing precipitation in some areas and increasing temperatures overall. Results indicate a more intense hydrological cycle as greenhouse gas emissions increase over time.

Response of global land evapotranspiration to climate change, elevated CO2, and land use change

Jianyu Liu et al.

Summary: Climate change, elevated CO2 concentration, and land use change have significantly altered land evapotranspiration, with climate change being the primary driver of increased evapotranspiration. However, CO2 and land use change also play distinct roles in affecting evapotranspiration in different regions.

Soil moisture-atmosphere feedback dominates land carbon uptake variability

Vincent Humphrey et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that global land carbon uptake variability is mainly driven by soil moisture, which indirectly affects photosynthesis. The soil moisture-atmosphere feedback mechanism amplifies temperature and humidity anomalies, enhancing the direct impact of soil water stress.

Widespread woody plant use of water stored in bedrock

Erica L. McCormick et al.

Summary: Research has shown that woody plants across the continental United States access water from bedrock for transpiration, indicating that rock moisture is a critical component of plant-available water sources. This highlights the need to revise conceptual paradigms regarding water and carbon cycling to incorporate the role of bedrock water storage.

An ecohydrological journey of 4500 years reveals a stable but threatened precipitation-groundwater recharge relation around Jerusalem

Simone Fatichi et al.

Summary: Groundwater is a crucial water resource in semiarid and seasonally dry regions, replenished by intermittent precipitation and regulated by vegetation, soil, and regolith. Research shows that the relationship between precipitation and groundwater recharge has remained stable in recent decades due to compensating responses in vegetation to rising CO2 levels. However, climate change is expected to impact this relationship, potentially decreasing recharge rates by up to -20% even with unchanged precipitation levels in the future.

Hydrological cycle and water resources in a changing world: A review

Dawen Yang et al.

Summary: Water is a fundamental natural resource that supports life, ecosystems, and human society. Studying the water cycle is crucial for sustainable development, particularly in the context of global climate change. Better understanding the impacts of climate change and human activities on hydrological processes and water resources across temporal and spatial scales is essential. Systematic approaches for large basin studies and interdisciplinary research are needed to address the joint impacts of these factors and promote sustainable development in line with the United Nations' goals.

Impacts of fertilization on grassland productivity and water quality across the European Alps under current and warming climate: insights from a mechanistic model

Summary: The study demonstrates the ecosystem response of alpine grasslands to fertilization practices. By simulating major fluxes across different grassland plots, the results show that climate change has a stronger impact on higher elevation sites, and there is a need to optimize current fertilization practices.
