Anchoring Multi-Scale Models to Micron-Scale Imaging of Multiphase Flow in Rocks

Shan Wang et al.

Summary: Image-based pore-scale modeling is an important method for studying multiphase flow in permeable rocks. However, the wide distribution of pore sizes in many rocks cannot be resolved in a single image. Recent research has incorporated sub-voxel porosity maps and introduced a baseline sub-rock typing method to reduce uncertainty in the models.

New type of pore-snap-off and displacement correlations in imbibition

Kamaljit Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pore-scale processes in natural porous media using time-resolved 3D X-ray imaging. A new type of snap-off in pores is discovered, trapping a small portion of the non-wetting phase in pore corners. The findings provide correlations for displacement events based on pore-throat geometry.

A Brief Review of Capillary Number and its Use in Capillary Desaturation Curves

Hu Guo et al.

Summary: Capillary number, as the ratio of viscous force to capillary force, is an important parameter in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). However, the nature and quantification of macroscopic capillary forces are still controversial. At least 41 different capillary numbers have been collected, indicating potential inconsistencies between various applications and publications.

Pore-scale imaging of asphaltene-induced pore clogging in carbonate rocks

Qingyang Lin et al.

Summary: This experimental methodology combines core flooding experiments with X-ray micro-CT to visualize asphaltene precipitation in the pore space of rocks and assess the reduction in permeability. The study found that precipitated asphaltene occupied 39.1% of the pore volume and caused a 29-fold reduction in permeability. Furthermore, numerical analysis of the flow field showed that after precipitation, the flow was confined to narrow channels in the pore space, with good agreement between simulated and measured permeability.

Integral effects of initial fluids configuration and wettability alteration on remaining saturation: characterization with X-ray micro-computed tomography

Yongqiang Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the initial water morphology and wettability alteration in low salinity waterflooding have effects on the final remaining oil saturation and oil ganglia size distribution, and the wettability alteration and oil recovery are not correlated with different water saturation conditions.

Fluid Invasion Dynamics in Porous Media With Complex Wettability and Connectivity

Arjen Mascini et al.

Summary: The study investigated multiphase flow in heterogeneous rocks with different wetting properties, revealing significant variability in driving force balance between different pores and a key role of viscous forces in the dynamics. The complex interplay between mixed wettability and pore structure exacerbated these differences, emphasizing the need for further research on the fundamental controls on multiphase flow in geomaterials.

In-situ capillary pressure and wettability in natural porous media: Multi-scale experimentation and automated characterization using X-ray images

Ahmed Zankoor et al.

Summary: This study introduces two new techniques for automated measurements of in-situ capillary pressure and contact angle, which are validated and applied in saturated porous media. The results show encouraging agreement between micro-scale measurements and macroscopic behaviors, with a nonmonotonic increase in saturation due to pore-scale intermittency. The new methods also enable the generation of in-situ contact angle distributions and automatic exclusion of invalid measurements.

Pore-scale imaging of displacement patterns in an altered-wettability carbonate

Qingyang Lin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates how pore-scale displacement affects macroscopic properties in an altered-wettability microporous carbonate using high-resolution X-ray imaging and a steady-state flow experiment. Different displacement patterns of oil and brine in the pore spaces were observed, leading to variations in relative permeability and residual oil saturation. These differences were primarily determined by the wettability of the rock.

Multiscale Digital Rock Analysis for Complex Rocks

L. C. Ruspini et al.

Summary: The properties of complex rocks are influenced by heterogeneity at different scales, making it challenging to capture all relevant length scales in detail with standard digital rock analysis tools. A multiscale imaging and pore-scale modeling workflow is introduced to derive transport properties of complex rocks with broad pore size distributions. This workflow categorizes unresolved porosity regions, combines 3D rock-type and porosity maps, and treats unresolved network elements as a continuum Darcy-type porous medium. The methodology is successfully applied to heterogeneous rock samples with promising results in predicting transport properties.
