Scour at River-Crossing Cylindrical Structures in Degrading Channels

Ruihua Nie et al.

Summary: This paper presents a case study on scour at a river-crossing canal in a degrading river, analyzing the cause, development process, and performance of countermeasures for scour. Three scour development modes at a river-crossing cylindrical structure in a degrading channel are identified, and predictors for estimating the equilibrium scour depth are proposed based on experimental data.

Sediment Nourishments to Mitigate Channel Bed Incision in Engineered Rivers

Matthew J. Czapiga et al.

Summary: Engineering modifications of rivers often lead to riverbed erosion, which can be mitigated using sediment nourishments. The dumping location, grainsize, and volume of nourishments are important factors for mitigation efficacy.

Geomorphic effects of a run-of-the-river dam in a multi-driver context: The case of the Upper Garonne (Central Pyrenees)

Theo Bulteau et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the morphological effects of the Plan d'Arem dam on the Upper Garonne river and distinguishes them from other drivers. The study finds that the dam led to channel narrowing, but upstream dams and catchment afforestation reduced peak flows and sediment supply, increasing the narrowing rate upstream. However, downstream tributaries buffered these changes. Additionally, flushing actions in the dam management regime mitigated the effects of the dam.

Massive Riverbed Erosion Induced by Inappropriate Grade Control: A Case Study in a Large-scale Compound Channel

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reports a failure case of grade control in a large-scale compound channel in China, analysing the impacts of improperly designed grade control structures on the bed morphology of the studied river reach and providing recommendations for GCS design in large-scale compound channels.

The impact of run-of-river dams on sediment longitudinal connectivity and downstream channel equilibrium

Francis J. Magilligan et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that large dams can fragment watersheds, while smaller Run-of-River (RoR) dams have a smaller impact on downstream sediment flux. Research in New England also found that RoR dams do not significantly disrupt the normative downstream sediment flux or cause morphological disequilibrium in channels downstream.

Impact of check dam series on coarse sediment connectivity

Tomas Galia et al.

Summary: This study tracked tagged particles in a reach intensively managed by torrent control works and in an untreated pool-riffle reach, revealing clear differences in particle retention patterns between the two reaches; the presence of torrent control works accelerated downstream transport of tagged particles, while the unmanaged reach showed higher retention of particles within the channel.

Erosion irregularities resulting from series of grade control structures: The Mszanka River, Western Carpathians

J. Korpak et al.

Summary: Grade control structures are commonly used in river regulation in mountain catchments to reduce the river bed gradient and prevent downcutting. This study found that erosion is the dominant process despite the use of GCSs, and surprisingly, scour holes were discovered upstream of the crests of the GCSs.

Sand, gravel, and UN Sustainable Development Goals: Conflicts, synergies, and pathways forward

Mette Bendixen et al.

Summary: The article examines the impacts of aggregate mining on the environment and humankind, and how it disrupts the net positive effects on sustainable development. It focuses on low- and middle-income countries and identifies critical obstacles to sustainable development of global aggregate resources.
