Integrated membrane electrochemical reactor-membrane distillation process for enhanced landfill leachate treatment

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: The combination of membrane electrochemical reactor (MER) and membrane distillation (MD) allows for simultaneous control of membrane fouling and resource recovery. Compared to MD and MD without pretreatment, the MER-MD system can more effectively remove pollutants and reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Membrane distillation treatment of landfill leachate: Characteristics and mechanism of membrane fouling

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, the membrane fouling in landfill leachate treatment by membrane distillation was systematically investigated. It was found that the increase of feed pH enhanced the deprotonation of carboxyl groups in organic matter, contributing to the formation of organo-inorganic complexation, which might be the main cause of membrane fouling in alkaline feed condition.

Nitrogen recovery from a palladium leachate via membrane distillation: System performance and ammonium chloride crystallization

Yuan Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) for nitrogen recovery from palladium leachate. Results show that feed temperature significantly affects membrane scaling and nitrogen recovery, while the initial pH has little impact on distillate flux. Nitrogen in the form of ammonium chloride was successfully recovered with a purity of up to 97.4% from the palladium leachate.

Evaluation of applying membrane distillation for landfill leachate treatment

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that landfill leachate can be efficiently treated using membrane distillation, achieving excellent rejection rates for organic carbon, phosphate, and metal ions under all tested conditions. The rejection rate of ammonia nitrogen can be increased by feed acidification, enhancing membrane fouling resistance. Additionally, energy consumption analysis indicated that waste heat from an incineration plant is sufficient to drive on-site treatment using MD.

Effect of biopolymers and humic substances on gypsum scaling and membrane wetting during membrane distillation

Zhongsen Yan et al.

Summary: The impact of organic compounds, including biopolymers and humic substances, on gypsum scaling in membrane distillation (MD) is investigated. The presence of organic fouling layer has limited effect on gypsum scaling, while dissolved organics in feedwater generally postpone instead of accelerate gypsum scaling. Different types of organic compounds exhibit varying effects on gypsum scaling in MD processes.

Sustainable ammonia resource recovery from landfill leachate by solar-driven modified direct contact membrane distillation

M. M. Zico et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a solar-driven modified membrane distillation system in recovering ammonia from landfill leachate, achieving a maximum removal rate of 98% and a recovery rate of 59%. The production of ammonium sulfate solution from the recovered ammonia for use as fertilizer demonstrated better economic performance, potentially reducing the total treatment cost of leachate.

Environmental sustainability of municipal wastewater treatment through struvite precipitation: Influence of operational parameters

Avhafunani Mavhungu et al.

Summary: The study examined the environmental sustainability of wastewater treatment through phosphate and ammonia chemical precipitation, identifying magnesium dosage and contact time as environmental hotspots. It found that raising wastewater temperature to promote ammonia stripping was environmentally unsound. Results suggest that struvite precipitation can act as a fast, efficient, and environmentally friendly pre-treatment step with low environmental impact when using low contact time and magnesium dosage.

Ammonia recovery from simulated anaerobic digestate using a two-stage direct contact membrane distillation process

Bing Xu et al.

Summary: A two-stage direct contact membrane distillation system is developed for efficient removal and recovery of ammonia from anaerobic digestate. A high initial pH of the feed solution is crucial for achieving high ammonia removal, while minimizing the volume of permeate solution can increase the concentration of ammonia.
