Evaluation of correlated studies using liquid cell and cryo-transmission electron microscopy: Hydration of calcium sulphate and the phase transformation pathways of bassanite to gypsum

M. Ilett et al.

Summary: Insight into the nucleation, growth and phase transformations of calcium sulphate is crucial for improving construction materials, reducing scaling in industrial processes, and understanding its formation in the natural environment. Recent studies have shown that gypsum can form in aqueous solution through an intermediate phase called bassanite. In this study, liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) and cryogenic TEM (cryo-TEM) were used to investigate the transformation from bassanite to gypsum. The results suggest that dissolution/reprecipitation is the main pathway for the transformation, and LCTEM provides real-time data that shows a slower transformation rate compared to cryo-TEM.

Contrasting Behaviors between Gypsum and Silica Scaling in the Presence of Antiscalants during Membrane Distillation

Yiming Yin et al.

Summary: This study compares the efficiencies of antiscalant candidates with different functional groups in mitigating gypsum scaling and silica scaling in membrane distillation desalination. Antiscalants with Ca(II)-complexing moieties are effective for inhibiting gypsum scaling, while amino-enriched antiscalants perform best in mitigating silica scaling. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses reveal distinct mechanisms of antiscalants required for these two common types of scaling.

Calcium phosphate scaling in osmotically driven membrane processes: Limiting flux behavior and its implications for scaling mitigation

Jingyuan Fei et al.

Summary: Limiting flux is a crucial parameter in PRO processes, playing a key role in improving performance. The concentration of dominant scaling precursors in the FS has a significant impact on the stabilized limiting flux. Adjusting FS pH and adding chelating agent can effectively reduce scaling and increase limiting flux.
