Morteza Afsari et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite electrospun nanofiber membrane was fabricated and used to treat geothermal brine with lithium enrichment. Silica nanoparticles were incorporated onto the surface of nanofibers using an in-situ growth technique. The fabricated membranes showed excellent separation performance with high salt rejection and adequate flux.

An omniphobic membrane with macro-corrugation for the treatment of real pharmaceutical wastewater via membrane distillation

Chenyi Fang et al.

Summary: In this study, an omniphobic membrane with macro-corrugation was developed for the treatment of realistic pharmaceutical wastewater. The membrane exhibited excellent performance in terms of high water contact angle, low water sliding angle, and resistance to fouling and scaling. These properties were attributed to the Teflon coating and the surface patterns, which provided simultaneous wetting resistance and enhanced turbulence. This research provides valuable insights for the design and application of membrane distillation membranes in treating challenging pharmaceutical wastewater.

Scaling resistance by fluoro-treatments: the importance of wetting states

Li Liu et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of commonly used fluoro-treatments on scaling resistance in membrane distillation. The results showed that CF4-MP-PVDF membrane demonstrated better scaling resistance than FAS-MP-PVDF, contrary to conventional thermodynamic nucleation models. The wetting states and hydraulic surface slippage were identified as the determinant factors.

Direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process for simulated brackish water treatment: An especial emphasis on impacts of antiscalants

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different types of antiscalants on scaling inhibition during brackish water membrane distillation (MD), finding that PBTCA and HPMA performed better than DTPMPA in inhibiting scaling in the MD system, leading to a significant mitigation of flux decline. The study suggests that HPMA may be more suitable for long-term MD desalination of brackish water, while caution is advised in the application of DTPMPA due to the risk of pore wetting.

Water recovery assessment from hypersaline lithium-rich brines using Membrane Distillation-Crystallization

Michelle Quilaqueo et al.

Summary: The current lithium extraction from hypersaline salt-lake brines is causing concerns due to the large water loss, which increases tension between communities and industrial companies in water-scarce areas. This study explores the feasibility of water recovery from synthetic hypersaline brines using a Membrane Distillation-Crystallization process. Experimental results show that the process can yield high-quality freshwater.

Micro-patterned PVDF membranes and magnetically induced membrane vibration system for efficient membrane bioreactor operation

Ayesha Ilyas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of spray-modified non-solvent induced phase separation (s-NIPS) to create large patterned PVDF membranes and magnetically induced membrane vibration (MMV) to enhance their anti-fouling properties. The results show that patterned membranes reduce fouling rate and increase critical flux, while membrane vibration further improves anti-fouling potential and delays irreversible fouling.

Contrasting Behaviors between Gypsum and Silica Scaling in the Presence of Antiscalants during Membrane Distillation

Yiming Yin et al.

Summary: This study compares the efficiencies of antiscalant candidates with different functional groups in mitigating gypsum scaling and silica scaling in membrane distillation desalination. Antiscalants with Ca(II)-complexing moieties are effective for inhibiting gypsum scaling, while amino-enriched antiscalants perform best in mitigating silica scaling. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses reveal distinct mechanisms of antiscalants required for these two common types of scaling.

Summary: Membrane distillation is a non-isothermal separation process using porous hydrophobic membranes. The study found that counter diffusion velocity significantly affects the accuracy of total flux prediction, and investigated the effects of different parameters on gain output ratio and transmembrane flux. Increases in feed inlet temperature and linear velocity were shown to enhance gain output ratio.
