Molecular characteristics and biological effects of dissolved organic matter leached from microplastics during sludge hydrothermal treatment

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: This study used FT-ICR-MS to investigate the molecular characteristics and biological effects of microplastics dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) leached from sludge hydrothermal treatment (HTT) at different temperatures. The results showed that the molecular richness and diversity of MP-DOM increased with rising temperature, accompanied by molecular transformation. The MP-DOM influenced the root development of Brassica rapa by affecting gene expression, with lignin-like compounds inhibiting Phenylpropanoids biosynthesis and CHNO compounds promoting nitrogen metabolism. The optimal HTT temperature for the further treatment of sludge was found to be 180℃.

Insight into chemical features of migrated additives from plastics and associated risks to estuarine ecosystem

Qiqing Chen et al.

Summary: Distinct hydrodynamic conditions in estuaries create a hotspot of plastic and additive pollution, but the impact of specific estuarine weathering on additive migration remains unclear. We simulated estuarine conditions to investigate the release of migrated plastic additives (MPAs) from different plastics. Wave actions significantly enhanced the leaching of MPAs, with more additives detected in plastic bag leachates. Nonionic surfactants, octylphenol polyethoxylates (OPEOn), showed high toxicity in packaging bag leachates, affecting zebrafish hatching and causing cardiovascular disorders. Overall, plastic leachates, especially from plastic bags, pose significant risks to estuarine ecosystems.

M. Priyanka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aging effects of PET microplastics under Fenton process and Seawater, analyzing their impact on the adsorption of organic contaminants. Various analytical techniques were used to understand the aging mechanism of PET microplastics, revealing different dissolved organic matter released in seawater and Fenton process. It was found that aged PET microplastics had higher adsorption capacity for 4-nitrophenol compared to normal PET microplastics, with hydrogen bonding and n-pi interaction playing significant roles in the adsorption mechanism.

Leaching and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter from petrol-based and biodegradable plastics

Romera-Castillo Cristina et al.

Summary: A study found that petrol-based plastics released fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) that can be utilized by microbes in the ocean, while biodegradable PLA did not release FDOM. The amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) released by PLA was similar to petrol-based plastics, indicating comparable microbial bioavailability. Therefore, caution should be taken when dealing with biodegradable plastics as not all types degrade in the ocean.

Residual additives in marine microplastics and their risk assessment-A critical review

Patrik Fauser et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current understanding of the risk assessment of plastic-associated residual additives in the marine environment, taking into account weathering and bioavailability. Organic and metal additive compounds have been found in leachates from plastics, and residual additives have been identified in weathered plastic particles collected from beaches and shorelines. However, studies on the uptake and bioaccumulation of plastic-associated chemicals are inconclusive, and there is a lack of research on hazard and risk assessments.

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter release from UV-aged microplastics and its cytotoxicity on human colonic adenocarcinoma cells

Yibo Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the change of Polyurethane microplastic (PU-MPs) and the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (PU-DOM) under different aging conditions. The results showed that the release amount of PU-DOM was higher under air aging compared to water aging. The composition of PU-DOM in different systems was the same, but the release amount was different. The cytotoxicity of PU-DOM was consistent with the changing trend of ROS level in PU-MPs, indicating the role of ROS in inducing in vitro toxicity. These results highlight the adverse health effects of photoaged PU-MPs and provide new perspectives for the environmental risks of microplastics.

Summary: This study characterized a marine bacterial community from the NW Mediterranean Sea growing on plastic leachates and measured its total activity. The results showed that the irradiated treatments had higher bacterial activity compared to the non-irradiated ones, and the biodegradable plastic leachates had lower activity but a similar bacterial composition to the petro-based plastics.

Tracing microplastic (MP)-derived dissolved organic matter in the infiltration of MP-contaminated sand system and its disinfection byproducts formation

Yun Kyung Lee et al.

Summary: This study tracks the spectroscopic signatures of MPs in sandy subsurface systems and explores their potential to form disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The addition of MPs increases the amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM) during infiltration, with UV-irradiated MPs having a more pronounced effect. Two fluorescent components, C1 and C2, are identified, with C1 being more predominant. Environmental interferences such as biodegradation and mineral adsorption do not fully explain the spectroscopic signatures of MP-DOM in the infiltration process.

Changes in physicochemical and leachate characteristics of microplastics during hydrothermal treatment of sewage sludge

Xiaowei Li et al.

Summary: Sewage sludge is a significant source of microplastics in the environment. Hydrothermal treatment is a promising method for reducing microplastics in sewage sludge. This study investigated the effects of hydrothermal treatment on the properties of microplastics in sewage sludge, focusing on three common types of microplastics. The results showed that hydrothermal treatment led to more broken and rougher microplastic surfaces in sludge, with higher concentrations of leachates. Organic components in sludge played a critical role in the enhanced hydrothermal degradation of microplastics, while inorganic components had a minor impact. Among the different types of microplastics, polyethylene terephthalate exhibited the most pronounced changes in physicochemical and leaching characteristics. The degradation of microplastics during hydrothermal treatment was mainly driven by depolymerization and leaching of plastics additives.

Roles of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter on the photodegradation of organic micropollutants

Muxin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the impact of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) on the photodegradation of organic micropollutants in natural water. It was found that MP-DOM significantly inhibited the photodegradation process, primarily due to the inner filter effect and complexation effect. Furthermore, the researchers observed that polystyrene-derived dissolved organic matter (PS-DOM) exhibited high oxidation resistance, leading to the inhibition of photodegradation by transferring electrons to the intermediates.
