Two birds with one stone: Cobalt-doping induces to enhanced piezoelectric property and persulfate activation ability of ZnO nanorods for efficient water purification

Yingying Wen et al.

Summary: Piezocatalysis combined with persulfate (PS) activation on Co doped ZnO nanorods was successfully employed to construct an advanced oxidation system for pollutants degradation. The Co dopant not only improves the piezoelectric property of ZnO, but also acts as the activation sites for PS, leading to efficient water purification. The main reactive species in this piezo-assisted PS activation system is confirmed to be the Co-PS complex (Co-S2O8), and a water flow stimulated reactor based on self-generated pressure was developed for catalytic purposes.

Solar evaporation performance of 3D-printed concave structures filled with activated carbon under low convective flow

R. Fillet et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D-printed geometries filled with activated carbon were used as solar evaporators to enhance water transport and photothermal conversion. The effect of low convection airflow, concave surface evaporation, light reflection, and natural convection on the evaporation performance was investigated. It was found that surface-to-surface radiation had a limited impact on the evaporation rate, which depend linearly on the evaporation area. The results showed that concavity in the structure should be avoided as it leads to moisture-saturated air, and the 3D structure should be as open as possible to allow the unsaturated air to escape.
