Cryptic Species in Ecotoxicology

Hydrography90m: a new high-resolution global hydrographic dataset

Summary: The geographic distribution of streams and rivers plays a crucial role in various processes in hydrology, geomorphology, geography, and ecology. However, the existing global hydrographies do not provide detailed information on small headwater streams, which are estimated to contribute to a significant portion of overall stream length. In this study, a globally seamless, standardised hydrographic network called Hydrography90m was developed using a high-resolution digital elevation model. The network includes both small streams and large rivers, along with their topographic and topological properties. The validation results demonstrate that Hydrography90m has the highest spatial precision and contains more headwater stream channels compared to other global hydrographic datasets. This comprehensive approach provides a much-needed baseline for assessing various aspects of surface water worldwide, such as freshwater quantity and quality, inundation risk, biodiversity, conservation, and resource management.

Ecosystems monitoring powered by environmental genomics: A review of current strategies with an implementation roadmap

Summary: A decade after the integration of high-throughput sequencing technologies into environmental science, genomics-based monitoring of anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems still faces challenges in implementation by regulatory frameworks. Technical limitations, conceptual issues, and diverse implementation strategies may contribute to the perception that routine application of this methodology is premature. Reviewing recent implementations, the strengths and limitations of four general implementation strategies for environmental genomics monitoring are discussed, with emphasis on the potential of integrating meiofauna and microorganisms into biomonitoring.

Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

Invertebrate turnover along gradients of anthropogenic salinisation in rivers of two German regions

Summary: The study found that turnover in freshwater invertebrates along gradients of anthropogenic electrical conductivity change can be significant, with certain invertebrates serving as reliable indicators of low or high EC change. Elevated nutrient concentrations linked to land use may exacerbate effects of EC on communities in water. The change in EC, quantified as the difference between measured EC and modeled background EC, can be used to examine the response of invertebrate communities to increasing anthropogenic salinity concentrations in rivers.

Effects of diclofenac on sentinel species and aquatic communities in semi-natural conditions
