Nitrate as a predictor of cyanobacteria biomass in eutrophic lakes in a climate change context

Fabien Cremona et al.

Summary: The study aimed to predict cyanobacteria biomass and nitrate concentrations in Lake Vortsjarv, Estonia. A model chain combining a mechanistic model and an empirical, generalized linear model was used to achieve this. The models successfully predicted the variations in cyanobacteria biomass and nitrate concentrations, providing results for different scenarios. The findings underscore the significance of reducing anthropogenic pressures on lake catchments to mitigate the proliferation of harmful pollutants and microalgae.

Wind induced algal migration manipulates sediment denitrification N-loss patterns in shallow Taihu Lake, China

Wenqing Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated sediment denitrification N-loss patterns along algal migration pathway in Taihu Lake, where it was found that algal biomass plays a significant role in influencing denitrification N-loss in sediments, with inhibition of N-loss beyond a certain critical threshold.

Dissimilatory nitrate reduction in urban lake ecosystems: A comparison study between closed and open lakes in Chengdu, China

Zhanbiao Yang et al.

Summary: The occurrence, contribution, and mechanism of nitrate reduction in urban closed and open lakes are still unclear. An experimental study was conducted in six urban lakes in Chengdu, China, showing that open lakes had higher rates of nitrate reduction compared to closed lakes, and different bacterial communities played distinct roles in nitrate reduction.

Eutrophication causes microbial community homogenization via modulating generalist species

Mengdie Geng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of eutrophication on microbial community structure in shallow lakes in the Yangtze-Huaihe River basin in China. The results showed that eutrophication led to the homogenization of bacterial and fungal communities in both water and sediments. Physicochemical factors such as water temperature, pH, and heavy metals were found to influence the community structure. Importantly, generalist species were found to play a dominant role in explaining the variations in beta diversity along the trophic gradient.

Microbial Nitrogen Transformation Potential in Sediments of Two Contrasting Lakes Is Spatially Structured but Seasonally Stable

Kathrin B. L. Baumann et al.

Summary: The nitrogen cycle is crucial for global ecosystems, and excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers can harm aquatic ecosystems. However, the microbial communities involved in nitrogen removal in freshwater lake sediments are poorly understood. This study investigates the abundance of microbial nitrogen transformation genes in two lakes with contrasting trophic states and demonstrates the importance of understanding the genomic potential for nitrogen transformation in interpreting nitrogen process rates.

Effects of submerged vegetation on sediment nitrogen-cycling bacterial communities in Honghu Lake (China)

Haoping Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of submerged vegetation (SV) on sediment nitrogen-cycling bacterial communities in Honghu Lake, China. Results showed that SV influenced the diversity and abundance of bacterial communities by improving water quality and sediment properties. The study also revealed the negative impact of high C:N ratio on specific bacterial assemblages.

Effects of drift algae accumulation and nitrate loading on nitrogen cycling in a eutrophic coastal sediment

Wei Wen Wong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of nitrogen pollution on permeable sediments dominated by the world's coastlines and continental shelves, finding that drift algae biomass and nitrate exposure significantly influence nitrogen cycling. Presence of drift algae dramatically increased DNRA and N2O production, while nitrate treatment led to decreases in both and an increase in denitrification. These findings suggest new feedbacks between eutrophication and greenhouse gas emissions.

Active DNRA and denitrification in oxic hypereutrophic waters

Elias Broman et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of synthetic fertilizers over a hundred years ago, coastal oceans have faced increasing nutrient loading, resulting in eutrophication and extensive algal blooms. Studies show that in a large hypereutrophic lagoon, both dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and denitrification processes are active, with DNRA playing a crucial role in recycling fixed nitrogen in the ecosystem.

DNRA was limited by sulfide and nrfA abundance in sediments of Xiamen Bay where heterotrophic sulfide-producing genus (Pelobacter) prevailed among DNRA bacteria

Xiaowen Li et al.

Summary: DNRA rates in Xiamen Bay were influenced by sulfide, organic carbon, nrfA gene abundances, and DNRA bacteria community. The main phyla of DNRA bacteria were Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria, with Pelobacter being the dominant genus. Additionally, the correlation analysis showed positive relationships between DNRA rate, nrfA abundance, environmental factors such as nitrite, total organic carbon, acid volatile sulfide, and total nitrogen.
