Microplastic dynamics in a free water surface constructed wetland

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of microplastics (MPs) in a newly established surface flow constructed wetland (CW) that receives 1.4 million liters per day of secondary treated wastewater. The study found that most MPs were synthetic fibers and fragments in the size range of 100-1000 micrometers. The CW effectively retained MPs, but the accumulation of MPs in sediments and substrate needs to be considered.

Removal of microfiber in vertical flow constructed wetlands treating greywater

Summary: The study found that constructed wetlands are effective in removing fiber microplastics from greywater. The vertical flow constructed wetland showed a removal efficiency of over 95% for microfibers. The hydraulic loading rate did not significantly affect the system's ability to remove microfibers, and high removal efficiencies were also observed for COD and turbidity.

Microplastic abundance, characteristics and removal in large-scale multi-stage constructed wetlands for effluent polishing in northern China

Microplastics profile in constructed wetlands: Distribution, retention and implications

Summary: Wastewater and stormwater are important pathways contributing microplastics to the aquatic environment. However, little is known about the potential influence of constructed wetlands, a commonly used wastewater and stormwater treatment system, on microplastics. This study investigated the abundance and distribution of microplastics in water and sediment in five constructed wetlands with different influent sources. The results showed that constructed wetlands can retain microplastics in treated water and become accumulators of microplastics over time.

Escherichia coli removal in a treatment wetland - pond system: A mathematical modelling experience

Transport and fate of microplastics in constructed wetlands: A microcosm study
