Towards a better and more complete understanding of microbial nitrogen transformation processes in the rhizosphere of subsurface flow constructed wetlands: Effect of plant root activities

Xiaojin Hu et al.

Summary: The effects of plant root activities on different microbial nitrogen transformation processes in the rhizosphere of constructed wetlands have not been comprehensively studied. This study investigated the N removal performance and transformation processes in the rhizosphere using various methods. Results showed that nitrification was promoted, denitrification was inhibited, and both anammox and DNRA processes were found to be inhibited in the rhizosphere. This study provides better insights into the biogeochemical cycle of N in the rhizosphere of constructed wetlands.

The effect of rhizosphere and the plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides in model constructed wetlands treating synthetic domestic wastewater

Jiaxi Wang et al.

Summary: The effects of rhizosphere and plant species on the degradation of sulfonamides in constructed wetlands are significant, with oxygen and dissolved organic carbon content promoting bacterial abundance and composition. The presence of oxygen in the rhizosphere plays a crucial role in the degradation of sulfonamides.

Nitrogen cycling and microbial cooperation in the terrestrial subsurface

Olivia E. Mosley et al.

Summary: The nitrogen cycle plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, including the subsurface. However, the diversity of nitrogen transformations in these environments is not well understood. This study investigated how nitrogen cycling microorganisms respond to different groundwater chemistries. The results showed that regardless of site-specific conditions, nitrogen cycling mechanisms were prevalent and highly redundant in groundwater communities. The study also revealed the presence of oxic-anoxic interfaces and potential synergistic interactions between microorganisms at these interfaces. The findings provide insights into cooperative relationships in groundwater communities and the complexity of metabolic mechanisms leading to nitrogen loss.

Optimization of the pollutant removal in partially unsaturated constructed wetland by adding microfiber and solid carbon source based on oxygen and carbon regulation

Xinhui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that adding microfiber and slow-release carbon source in the constructed wetland can significantly enhance the efficiency of nitrogen removal, increase the number of microbes, and solve the denitrification efficiency issue caused by low carbon-to-nitrogen ratio.

Phosphorus removal performance of microbial-enhanced constructed wetlands that treat saline wastewater

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that using intertidal wetland sediments as a microbial source for CWs can effectively improve phosphorus removal rates, with bacteria such as phosphorus-accumulating organisms enhancing microbial transformation of phosphorus. However, the addition of IWS increased phosphorus loss via substrate accumulation and decreased phosphorus removal rate via plant uptake.

Comparing root exudate collection techniques: An improved hybrid method

Alex Williams et al.

Summary: Plant-microbe interactions are crucial for ecosystem functioning and root exudates play a key role in communication between plants and microbes. Hybrid root exudate collection methods offer an ecologically relevant alternative, but a recovery period after root washing is critical to prevent bias. The hybrid method yields exudates that discriminate between species and provide a diverse metabolome for better identification of metabolites.

Enhanced denitrification performance of strain YSF15 by different molecular weight of humic acid: Mechanism based on the biological products and activity

Shuai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the facilitation of different molecular weight humic acid fractions on denitrification by strain YSF15 under low carbon-nitrogen ratio and nitrate conditions. The <3 kDa fraction was found to be the most effective in promoting denitrification, leading to more stable oxidation-reduction potential and compact protein structure.

Active DNRA and denitrification in oxic hypereutrophic waters

Elias Broman et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of synthetic fertilizers over a hundred years ago, coastal oceans have faced increasing nutrient loading, resulting in eutrophication and extensive algal blooms. Studies show that in a large hypereutrophic lagoon, both dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and denitrification processes are active, with DNRA playing a crucial role in recycling fixed nitrogen in the ecosystem.

Plant rhizodeposition: A key factor for soil organic matter formation in stable fractions

Sebastian H. Villarino et al.

Summary: The formation of soil organic carbon is poorly understood, with uncertainties remaining for the contributions of different inputs to the particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon fractions. Rhizodeposition has the highest efficiency in forming MAOC, while root biomass inputs have the highest efficiency in forming POC. Rhizodeposition and roots play opposite but complementary roles in building MAOC and POC fractions.

A review on the role of plant in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) removal in constructed wetlands

Xiaojin Hu et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands show good removal performance for PPCPs through the combined processes of substrates, plants, and microorganisms. This review summarizes the direct and indirect roles of wetland plants in PPCP removal, with indirect effects appearing more significant. Wetland plants can enhance PPCP removal through improved rhizosphere microbial activities and the formation of supramolecular ensembles with humic acids, improving efficiency by up to four times.
