Insight into the relationships between total suspended particles and mercury in meltwater in a typical glacierized basin in the inland Tibetan Plateau

Xuejun Sun et al.

Summary: Mercury (Hg) released by melting glaciers can bind to suspended particles in meltwater runoff, which can pose potential risks to downstream ecosystems. This study investigates the relationships between total suspended particles (TSP) and Hg in the context of glacier retreat. The results show that TSP concentration and number have an impact on the diurnal variation of Hg in meltwater runoff, and sites with high TSP concentrations tend to have higher Hg concentrations. The study also discusses the potential impact of TSP on Hg transport in different zones of the glacier recharge basin.

Coupling of nitric acid digestion and anion-exchange resin separation for the determination of methylmercury isotopic composition within organisms

Elizabeth R. Crowther et al.

Summary: Isotope ratios of methylmercury (MeHg) within organisms can be used to identify sources of MeHg that have accumulated in food webs. A new method for extracting and isolating MeHg from fish and aquatic invertebrates has been developed for compound-specific isotopic analysis. This method provides a streamlined and reliable technique that produces reproducible results.

Mercury Isotope Fractionation during Dark Abiotic Reduction of Hg(II) by Dissolved, Surface-Bound, and Structural Fe(II)

Lorenz Schwab et al.

Summary: This study contributes significantly to the database of Hg isotope enrichment factors for specific processes. The findings show that Hg(II) reduction by dissolved Fe(II) in open systems results in a kinetic mass-dependent fractionation (MDF) with a larger epsilon compared to other abiotic reduction pathways, and combining MDF with the observed mass-independent fractionation (MIF) allows the distinction from photochemical or microbial Hg(II) reduction pathways.

Reduction in mercury bioavailability to Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) and changes in bacterial communities in sediments with activated carbon amendment

Mark Xavier Bailon et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanisms controlling the reduction of mercury (Hg) bioavailability in activated carbon (AC) amended estuarine sediments. The results showed that AC amendment decreased Hg bioavailability not only through physicochemical sorption, but also by changing geochemical species and shifting the microbial community composition. These findings are important for managing and remediating Hg contaminated sediments.

Seasonal trends of mercury bioaccumulation and assessment of toxic effects in Asian clams and microbial community from field study of estuarine sediment

Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary et al.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal trends in bioaccumulation potential and toxic effects of mercury in Asian clams and microbial community. The results showed that mercury accumulation in clams and pore water was highest during the summer season at contaminated sites. The upregulation of biomarker genes in clams indicated their response to mercury contamination. High levels of mercury negatively affected bacterial and metabolic diversities.

Isotope investigation of mercury sources in a creek impacted by multiple anthropogenic activities

Saebom Jung et al.

Summary: The study revealed diverse mercury sources at Gumu Creek, including commercial liquid mercury, phenyl-mercury, and fly ash, consistent with the types of waste deposited within the hazardous waste landfill (HWL). The results suggest that mercury isotope ratios can effectively identify potential mercury sources in heterogeneous environments with multiple anthropogenic activities.

Distribution of mercury isotope signatures in Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China, after long-term interventions

Shuyuan Huang et al.

Summary: Isotope signatures of mercury (Hg) in various fractions from Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China showed significant variations in mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionations. Three main sources of Hg in the lagoon seawater were identified, with photochemical reactions being the main process causing isotope fractionation. Mercury isotopes were found to be powerful tools for tracing Hg sources and understanding Hg biogeochemical cycling, demonstrating the importance of long-term interventions in the lagoon.

Use of sequential extraction and mercury stable isotope analysis to assess remobilization of sediment-bound legacy mercury

Elizabeth R. Crowther et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that legacy mercury in streambed sediment can be remobilized and enter stream water as dissolved mercury, potentially being incorporated into streambed biofilm. Weakly-bound sediment mercury pools play a significant role in this process, contributing to the isotopic composition of dissolved mercury and being transferred to biofilm and suspended particulates along the flow path.
