L-cysteine boosted Fe(III)-activated peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation: Role of L-cysteine and mechanism

Yinhao Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, L-cysteine was used to enhance the Fe(III)/peracetic acid system for sulfamethoxazole degradation. The addition of L-cysteine significantly increased the degradation efficiency of the system. The role of L-cysteine in promoting sulfamethoxazole degradation was proposed and the degradation intermediates were identified. The L-cysteine/Fe(III)/PAA system showed good tolerance to Cl- and humic acid but was inhibited by HCO3-. The study provides a feasible strategy for enhancing the oxidation capacity of the Fe(III)/PAA system and an effective technique for the treatment of sulfamethoxazole in real waters.

Enhanced removal of organoarsenic by chlorination: Kinetics, effect of humic acid, and adsorbable chlorinated organoarsenic

Sisi Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, effective removal of organoarsenic ROX was achieved by the combined process of chlorination + Fe(II), with chlorine degrading ROX effectively at different pH levels. The degradation of ROX was mainly attributed to the reaction between HOCl and deprotonated ROX, while humic acid inhibited this degradation. Furthermore, an enhanced removal of total arsenic was observed after chlorination, with over 97.8% of total arsenic removed.

Novel solar-driven ferrate(VI) activation system for micropollutant degradation: Elucidating the role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V)

Jiamin Mai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel process using solar-ferrate(VI) for efficient degradation of micropollutants. The study found that Fe(V) and Fe(IV), rather than reactive oxygen species, played a significant role in the process. The researchers also elucidated the reaction mechanism of Fe(VI) and its degradation of micropollutants. Additionally, the study investigated the effect of pH and various ions on the degradation process. The solar-ferrate(VI) process demonstrated excellent applicability under different irradiation conditions.

Simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of para arsanilic acid by a highly efficient nanostructured Fe-Ti-Mn composite oxide

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study achieved simultaneous adsorption and oxidation of para arsanilic acid (p-ASA) using a synthesized nanostructured Fe-Ti-Mn composite oxide (FTMO), effectively reducing the risks to human health and environmental systems. The chemisorption process by FTMO for p-ASA was influenced significantly by solution pH, coexisting ions, and humic acid, forming inner-sphere complexes at the solid/water interface.

Efficient Degradation of Organoarsenic by UV/Chlorine Treatment: Kinetics, Mechanism, Enhanced Arsenic Removal, and Cytotoxicity

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: ROX can be efficiently degraded by UV/chlorine, with the highest degradation rate at pH 7.5, and over 98% of total As can be removed by ferrous after UV/chlorine treatment; cytotoxicity significantly increases during the degradation of ROX, but can be greatly reduced by the combination of UV/chlorine and adsorption.

Fenton-type process using peracetic acid: Efficiency, reaction elucidations and ecotoxicity

Thayrine Dias Carlos et al.

Summary: Recent studies on Fenton-type processes involving peracetic acid (PAA) have led to further development of advanced oxidative processes (AOPs). The reaction of PAA with Fe3+ showed higher dye degradation efficiency compared to the Fenton process, while the reaction with Fe2+ was similar to the Fenton process. Photocatalytic processes using solar radiation demonstrated comparable efficiencies due to the photoreduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. The theoretical calculations showed that the formation of oxidizing radicals during the reaction of PAA with Fe2+ was not thermodynamically favorable, while reactions in the PAA/Fe3+ system were thermodynamically spontaneous and generated beneficial radicals. Evaluated ecotoxicological tests revealed the toxicity of PAA to the organism Dugesia tigrina was mainly due to the presence of H2O2.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2): A novel activator of peracetic acid for the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics

Jingwen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel advanced oxidation process using MoS2/PAA was applied to degrade sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), with sulfamethoxazole (SMX) as the target SA. Results showed that under optimum pH conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMX exceeded 80% after 15 minutes of reaction. Increasing the dosages of PAA or MoS2 facilitated SMX degradation, while the presence of humic acids slowed down the removal of SMX.

Complete Removal of Organoarsenic by the UV/Permanganate Process via HO• Oxidation and in Situ-Formed Manganese Dioxide Adsorption

Wenrui Wei et al.

Summary: The UV/permanganate process is a promising innovation for the removal of organic heavy metals from water, utilizing oxidative and adsorptive species to effectively remove organoarsenic compounds. By investigating the removal of roxarsone and p-arsanilic acid, it was found that the cooperation of oxidation and adsorption could lead to significant removal rates of total arsenic in water treatment.
