Incorporating hydrothermal liquefaction into wastewater treatment-Part II: Characterization, environmental impacts, and potential applications of hydrochar

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the properties, environmental influences, and possible utilizations of hydrochar generated from mixed sludge. With the increase of HTL reaction temperatures and residence time, the dry-weight contents of ash and fuel ratio increased while the drybasis contents of volatile matter, carbon, and higher heating value sharply decreased. Hydrochar performed more stable combustion than sludge, but its high ash contents and alkali index implied high risks of slagging and fouling. Hydrochar has a good potential for carbon sequestration and metals and nutrient recovery.

Summary: This study characterized HTL aqueous samples and identified their composition, including compounds such as N-heterocyclics, VFAs, amides, ketones, amines, and phenolics. The COD levels of HTL aqueous samples were 87-103 g/L. Pretreatment is necessary for detoxification of HTL aqueous before biological treatment.

Changes in Canada's Phosphorus Cycle 1961-2018: Surpluses and Deficits

Jiaxin Wang et al.

Summary: Human activities have had a significant impact on global phosphorus cycling, and the long-term dynamics of phosphorus in Canada have not been well understood. This study quantified the temporal dynamics of phosphorus cycling in Canadian provinces and found that most agricultural regions had phosphorus surpluses, except for Saskatchewan which had deficits. Quebec and the Atlantic provinces had the highest phosphorus surpluses, while Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia had lower surpluses. Cropland played a more important role in phosphorus cycling than pasture, and the Prairie provinces had the highest phosphorus use efficiency.

Phosphorus release from hydrothermally carbonized digested sewage sludge using organic acids

Carla Perez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the leaching efficiency of phosphorus (P) and the release of metals and heavy metals from hydrochars produced by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). The results show that oxalate can achieve nearly complete P release under different pH values and carbonization temperatures, but it also transfers metals/heavy metals into the leachate.

Incorporating hydrothermal liquefaction into wastewater treatment - Part I: Process optimization for energy recovery and evaluation of product distribution

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of hydrothermal liquefaction as a sustainable method to convert municipal sewage sludge into renewable energy source, biocrude. The effects of reaction temperature and residence time on biocrude yield and quality were investigated using response surface methodology. The study found that optimizing the reaction conditions resulted in maximized biocrude yield and energy recovery. The composition and quality of the biocrude were influenced by the reaction temperature. Upgrading and recovering trace metals from the biocrude were also found to be necessary. These findings contribute to the advancement of biorefinery technology and can guide the design of full-scale sludge treatment systems.

Evaluation of the sustainability of technologies to recover phosphorus from sewage sludge ash based on embodied energy and CO2 footprint

Ario Fahimi et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel approach for sustainability evaluation of new technologies, utilizing embodied energy and CO2 footprint parameters for pre-screening analysis before life cycle assessment. The SUBRAW index is defined to compare environmental impacts of different substituting materials/processes. Results suggest that wet chemical leaching approaches are the most sustainable methods for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash.

Acid-Induced Phosphorus Release from Hydrothermally Carbonized Sewage Sludge

Carla Perez et al.

Summary: The study investigated the speciation and recovery of phosphorus from metal-bearing sewage sludge hydrochars, finding that acid leaching was effective for phosphorus recovery, especially at low HTC temperatures. However, higher temperatures and longer reaction times decreased phosphorus release rates, necessitating a post-treatment purification process.

Summary: Phosphorus is a critical non-renewable resource, and its recovery and recycling are essential for meeting future P demands and environmental conservation. Wet-chemical extraction and precipitation techniques have shown effectiveness in recovering phosphorus from sludge-derived ash and hydrochar. Different extraction methods have their own advantages and disadvantages, with sequential extraction showing promising efficiency and low metal interferences.

A review on key design and operational parameters to optimize and develop hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass for biorefinery applications

Ibrahim Alper Basar et al.

Summary: The increase in environmental awareness has led to a shift towards renewable energy sources and waste valorization technologies. Among these, biomass conversion and biofuels, especially through hydrothermal liquefaction, have gained significant attention for their potential in existing infrastructure. However, there are still gaps in optimization, reactor design, and catalyst effects that require further exploration. This review summarizes the current state and importance of hydrothermal liquefaction, providing a reference point for future research in the field.
