Accurate Removal of Toxic Organic Pollutants from Complex Water Matrices

Junzhuo Cai et al.

Summary: This critical review focuses on the overall strategies for accurately removing highly toxic emerging pollutants in the presence of typical interferents. The main difficulties hindering the improvement of selectivity in complex matrices are analyzed, implying that it is difficult to adopt a universal approach for multiple targets and water substrates. Selective methods based on assorted principles are proposed aiming to improve the anti-interference ability.

Photodegradation of Rhodamine B and Bisphenol A Over Visible-Light Driven Bi7O9I3-and Bi12O17Cl2-Photocatalysts Under White LED Irradiation

Damian Tuba-Guaman et al.

Summary: Two different bismuth oxyhalides photocatalysts, Bi7O9I3 and Bi12O17Cl2, were synthesized and their catalytic properties for pollutant degradation were investigated. Bi12O17Cl2 exhibited higher mineralization rates for both Rhodamine B and Bisphenol A, while Bi7O9I3 showed effective removal of Rhodamine B even in the dark.

AQDS Activates Extracellular Synergistic Biodetoxification of Copper and Selenite via Altering the Coordination Environment of Outer-Membrane Proteins

Xue-Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the synergistic detoxification of Cu2+ and SeO32- by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in a complex environmental matrix. The addition of AQDS triggers a transition from intracellular to extracellular reaction, accelerating Cu2+ and SeO32- biodetoxification. The slightly raised redox potential of AQDS-coordinated outer-membrane proteins contributes to the faster electron efflux from the cells.

Thiadiazole-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with a Donor-Acceptor Structure: Modulating Intermolecular Charge Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Typical Emerging Contaminants

Yanghui Hou et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential as novel metal-free photocatalysts for decontaminating pollutants in water. This study demonstrates that intramolecular charge transfer within COFs can be modulated by constructing a donor-acceptor (D-A) structure, leading to improved photocatalytic performance. By integrating electron donor and acceptor units, two COFs (COF-TD1 and COF-TD2) were fabricated as visible-light-driven photocatalysts for degrading paracetamol. COF-TD1 exhibited superior photodegradation performance due to efficient electron-hole separation, and it could effectively degrade paracetamol even in complex water matrices. COF-TD1 also showed effective degradation of other emerging contaminants. The study provides an effective strategy for designing excellent COF-based photocatalysts.

Extended Hydrogen Bond Networks for Effective Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer (PCET) Reactions: The Unexpected Role of Thiophenol and Its Acidic Channel in Photocatalytic Hydroamidations

Nele Berg et al.

Summary: Preorganization and aggregation in photoredox catalysis have significant effects on reactivities and selectivities, often overlooked in synthetic and mechanistic studies. The cooperative reactivity enhancements of thiophenol/disulfide mixtures highlight the importance of H-bond networks. Incorporating NMR spectroscopic analysis and MD simulations reveals the acidic properties of thiophenol, leading to optimizations of radical and ionic channels for accelerated reactions.

Steric hindrance effect on adsorption of xanthate on sphalerite surface: A DFT study

Ye Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of steric hindrance effect on xanthate adsorption on sphalerite surface using DFT, revealing that the spatial hindrance caused by sulfur atoms leads to steric hindrance effect. The replacement of surface zinc atoms with copper atoms was found to decrease the energy barrier caused by steric hindrance, facilitating xanthate adsorption.
