Generation of hydroxyl radicals via activation of Cr(VI) by UVA-LED for rapid decontamination: The important role of Cr(V)

Cui Huang et al.

Summary: Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) was efficiently removed by activation with ultraviolet-A light-emitting diode (UVA-LED), degrading various pollutants. The generation of hydroxyl radicals (HO•) and pentavalent chromium (Cr(V)) in the UVA-LED/Cr(VI) system was confirmed. Hydroxyl radicals were identified as the dominant reactive species, aiding in the removal of pollutants in chromium-containing wastewater.

Novel solar/sulfite advanced oxidation process for carbamazepine degradation: Radical chemistry, transformation pathways, influence on disinfection byproducts and toxic changes

Han Chen et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) play a significant role in eliminating persistent micro-contaminants in water. In this study, a solar/sulfite process was developed to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) and showed effectiveness in CBZ elimination. The generated sulfate and hydroxyl radicals contributed to the degradation of CBZ, and the process pH and the presence of certain substances affected the degradation efficiency. The study also identified major degradation intermediates of CBZ and proposed a transformation pathway. Furthermore, the solar/sulfite pretreatment reduced the formation of disinfection byproducts during subsequent chlorination, demonstrating its potential in controlling water contamination.

Microenvironment modulation of cobalt single-atom catalysts for boosting both radical oxidation and electron-transfer process in Fenton-like system

Kexin Yin et al.

Summary: Two coordination structures (Co-N4 or Co-N3) of cobalt single-atom catalysts (Co-SACs) were prepared using chitosan as a starting precursor to evaluate their effect on organic degradation. The performance of degrading carbamazepine (CBZ) and the radical/nonradical pathways in Co-N4/PMS and Co-N3/PMS systems were evaluated. Results showed that the Co-N3 catalyst produced more radicals due to stronger PMS adsorption and subsequent peroxide bond cleavage of PMS. The Co-N3 coordination also enhanced the electron-transfer process for CBZ. This study provides insights into the versatile catalytic pathways of carbon-based SACs for high-efficiency PMS activation.

Natural source of Cr(VI) in soil: The anoxic oxidation of Cr(III) by Mn oxides

Ming Ao et al.

Summary: Cr(VI) in soils and groundwater is primarily derived from the oxidation of geogenic Cr(III) minerals rather than direct emissions. The oxidation of Cr(III) is mainly facilitated by Mn oxides in anoxic soils and by O-2 in oxic soils. The presence of Mn oxides promotes the oxidative dissolution of chromite even under anoxic conditions. The form of Cr, the abundance of Mn oxides, and the presence of reducing agents control the content of Cr(VI) in soil.

Novel solar-driven ferrate(VI) activation system for micropollutant degradation: Elucidating the role of Fe(IV) and Fe(V)

Jiamin Mai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel process using solar-ferrate(VI) for efficient degradation of micropollutants. The study found that Fe(V) and Fe(IV), rather than reactive oxygen species, played a significant role in the process. The researchers also elucidated the reaction mechanism of Fe(VI) and its degradation of micropollutants. Additionally, the study investigated the effect of pH and various ions on the degradation process. The solar-ferrate(VI) process demonstrated excellent applicability under different irradiation conditions.

Humic acid induced indirect photolysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers under visible light irradiation

Meiying Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the indirect photolysis and debromination of the organic brominated pollutant decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE209) under visible light irradiation in the presence of humic acid (HA). The results show that HA induces electron transfer and facilitates the activation of C-Br bond via halogen bonds, resulting in the preferential cleavage of meta-C-Br bond. Furthermore, carboxyl group is identified as the key functional group capable of providing oxygen terminals to form halogen bonds.

Enhanced oxidation of carbamazepine by UV-LED/persulfate and UV-LED/H2O2 processes in the presence of trace copper ions

Anhong Cai et al.

Summary: The study compared the degradation of CBZ using UV-LED/PS and UV-LED/H2O2 processes with trace Cu2+ at neutral pH. The presence of trace Cu2+ accelerated CBZ degradation, with UV-LED/PS process showing better performance. The addition of Cu2+ had a more significant effect at low levels in both processes at neutral pH. The degradation was mainly contributed by (OH)-O-center dot in the pH range of 3.1-7.2.

Evaluation of the concentration and contribution of superoxide radical for micropollutant abatement during ozonation

Yang Guo et al.

Summary: During ozonation, the concentrations ratios of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and ozone remain constant, indicating the potential non-negligible role of superoxide radicals in the degradation of certain micropollutants with similar or higher reactivity compared to hydroxyl radicals. The proposed chemical kinetic model accurately simulates the abatement efficiencies of ozone-resistant micropollutants by considering the contribution of superoxide radicals, providing a valuable tool for predicting micropollutant removal during ozonation.

The role of carbonate radicals on the kinetics, radical chemistry, and energy requirement of UV/chlorine and UV/H2O2 processes

Shumin Zhu et al.

Summary: Quantitative insight into HCO3--dependent degradation kinetics is essential for understanding UV processes. A kinetic model was developed to predict kinetics in UV/H2O2 and UV/chlorine processes. The presence of bicarbonate (HCO3-) impacts CBZ degradation and radical chemistry in UV processes, with HCO3- inhibiting CBZ degradation to different degrees. HO center dot and CO3-center dot make comparable contributions to CBZ degradation in UV/H2O2 process in the presence of HCO3-, while ClO center dot is the main contributor at various HCO3- concentrations. Overall, HCO3- and CO3-center dot have a higher impact on the reactions and mechanism of UV/H2O2 processes.

Mechanistic Investigation of Enhanced Photoreactivity of Dissolved Organic Matter after Chlorination

Dong Wan et al.

Summary: The study found that chlorine disinfection significantly reduces the aromaticity, electron-donating capacity, and average molecular weight of DOM, leading to an increase in the photoproduction activity of DOM after chlorination. The quantum yields of reactive species produced by chlorinated DOM under sunlight irradiation are positively correlated with the absorbance ratio and negatively correlated with the electron-donating capacity. Overall, chlorine disinfection has a synergistic effect on the photosensitization of DOM, which aids in the removal of trace pollutants in surface waters.
