Efficient emerging contaminants (EM) decomposition via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by Co3O4/carbonized polyaniline (CPANI) composite: Characterization of tetracycline (TC) degradation property and application for the remediation of EM-polluted water body

Jin Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a Co3O4-carbonized polyaniline composite (Co3O4/CPANI) was used as a peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and other antibiotics in water. The Co3O4/CPANI + PMS system exhibited high catalytic performance, with the reactive oxygen species O-1(2) being the dominant contributor to TC degradation. The study also identified various active sites in the PMS activation process, including C=O groups, oxygen vacancies, Co2+/Co3+ species, and graphitic N, with oxygen vacancies playing a crucial role in the generation of O-1(2).

Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped porous carbons (NPCs) for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation towards tetracycline degradation: Defects enhanced adsorption and non-radical mechanism dominated by electron transfer

Minxian Cheng et al.

Summary: Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped porous carbons were synthesized and their excellent degradation ability to tetracycline was observed. Electron transfer mediated by metastable reactive complexes and singlet oxygen played a key role in the degradation process. The introduction of phosphorus promoted the adsorption and activation of peroxydisulfate, leading to high-efficiency removal of contaminants.

Transcriptome Profiling of Stenotrophomonas sp. Strain WZN-1 Reveals Mechanisms of 2,2′,4,4′-Tetrabromodiphenyl Ether (BDE-47) Biotransformation

Yadi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the aerobic degradation of the brominated flame retardant BDE-47 by Stenotrophomonas sp. strain WZN-1 and the transcriptome analysis. The research reveals that BDE-47 degradation mainly occurs through debromination and hydroxylation by intracellular enzymes. The differentially expressed genes related to transport, metabolism, and stress response are identified. Bacterial chemotaxis is found to potentially play a role in the biodegradation of BDE-47 by Stenotrophomonas sp. strain WZN-1.

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals in effluent and sludge from a wastewater treatment plant in Brazil

Ramiro Pereira Bisognin et al.

Summary: This study assessed the presence, fate, and removal of pharmaceuticals in effluent and sludge samples from a major sewage treatment plant in Southern Brazil. While some pharmaceuticals showed high removal rates, others were still detected in effluent and sludge, highlighting the need for improved removal processes. The high pharmaceutical loads discharged into water bodies indicate a potential environmental impact, emphasizing the importance of enhancing pharmaceutical removal from sewage.
