In situ remediation mechanism of internal nitrogen and phosphorus regeneration and release in shallow eutrophic lakes by combining multiple remediation techniques

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the remediation mechanism of multiple remediation technique combinations on sediment nitrogen and phosphorus loads. The results show that combining multiple remediation techniques is more effective in controlling sediment phosphorus loads than a single remediation in the long term.

Wastewater treatment plant contaminant profiles affect macroinvertebrate sludge degradation

Tom V. van der Meer et al.

Summary: The disposal of excess wastewater treatment plant sludge is a growing problem with financial and environmental implications. This study examined how the contaminant concentrations and profiles in the sludge affected the degradation of the sludge by macroinvertebrate detritivores. The results showed that the degradation of the sludge was specific to the combination of macroinvertebrate taxa and the wastewater treatment plant. The study concludes that macroinvertebrates could be a potential tool for reducing excess sludge and using multispecies assemblages may enhance the effectiveness of this treatment step.

Nitrite and nitrate reduction drive sediment microbial nitrogen cycling in a eutrophic lake

Dandan Zhang et al.

Summary: The anaerobic microbial nitrogen removal process in lake sediments is an important part of the nitrogen cycling in lake ecosystems. However, the mechanisms regulated by denitrifying and anaerobic ammonia oxidation bacteria in lake sediments are not well understood. This study examined the denitrifying and anammox bacterial communities in Lake Donghu sediments and found that the concentrations of NO(3)(-) and NO2-, as well as Nar enzyme activity, were key factors affecting these communities. The enrichment experiments confirmed the divergence of denitrification and anammox rates with the addition of NO2-. The study advances our understanding of the mechanisms driving denitrification and anammox in lake sediments and provides new insights into coupled denitrification-anammox nitrogen removal in eutrophic lake ecosystems.

Decrease in macrofauna density increases the sediment phosphorus release and maintains the high phosphorus level of water column in Lake Taihu: A case study on Grandidierella taihuensis

Cai Li et al.

Summary: This study focused on the role of benthic fauna bioturbation in affecting sediment P release and the P level in a eutrophic lake. The results showed that benthic fauna can increase the penetration depth of oxygen and promote the oxidation of soluble iron, leading to increased P retention in sediments. The decline in benthic fauna density and activity may be an important factor in maintaining high P levels in the water column.

Nitrogen removal enhanced by benthic bioturbation coupled with biofilm formation: A new strategy to alleviate freshwater eutrophication

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that the combination of bioturbation and biofilm function (SCB) was more effective in removing total nitrogen than using either bioturbation or biofilm alone. Bioturbation promoted nitrogen release from sediments to the overlying water, while biofilm enhanced the conversion and removal of nitrogen, resulting in the lowest concentration of total nitrogen in the overlying water in SCB treatment.

Influence of restored mussel reefs on denitrification in marine sediments

Jenny R. Hillman et al.

Summary: The majority of shellfish reefs have been lost globally, but restoration efforts have the potential to regain lost ecosystem services. Research has shown that restored mussel reefs can enhance denitrification, reducing the risk of future eutrophication. The importance of nutrient remineralisation varies in different site conditions, highlighting the need for strategic site selection in ecosystem restoration efforts.

Benthic macroinvertebrate communities of three tropical, warm monomictic Mexican lakes

Daniela Cortes-Guzman et al.

Summary: This study described the benthic macroinvertebrate communities of three tropical lakes in Mexico and found a decreasing trend in taxonomic richness, density, and biomass from the littoral to the deep zone. The benthic macroinvertebrate community was poorer during stratification compared to mixing, and tropical lakes had lower richness and density compared to temperate lakes.
