Breakthrough times for barrier systems at typical municipal solid waste landfills in China

Shi Shu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the breakthrough times for bottom barrier systems used in typical active MSW landfills in four Chinese cities using numerical modeling of chemical oxygen demand transport. The results showed that using a leachate head of 0.3 m, the breakthrough times for the barrier systems in all four landfills were greater than 50 years. However, under actual leachate head conditions, the breakthrough time for the barrier system in the Hangzhou landfill was only 27 years. The results of this study provide reference data for designing and managing landfill barrier systems.

Contaminant migration and the retention behavior of a laterite-bentonite mixture engineered barrier in a landfill

Yong He et al.

Summary: Groundwater pollution, particularly from leachate leakage in landfills, has become more severe in recent years. A study analyzing the migration of Cu2} in landfills and the retention behavior of a compacted laterite-bentonite barrier system found that the hydraulic conductivity of the mixture decreased with an increase in bentonite ratio. Numerical simulations showed that the migration range of Cu2} was approximately 1500 m after 3650 days, with retention efficiency increasing with barrier thickness. These findings suggest that the engineered barrier system has a good retention effect on Cu2} and may provide effective concepts for preventing and controlling groundwater pollution in landfills.

Integrated groundwater management using a comprehensive conceptual framework

Mahsa Malmir et al.

Summary: By combining DPSIR and GOF frameworks, this study conducted a comprehensive assessment of the Najafabad aquifer system in Iran, proposing scenarios to improve the aquifer's state and using technical and economic indicators to evaluate the effectiveness of management strategies. The study found that reducing groundwater exploitation and cultivated area can effectively maintain aquifer balance over the simulation period.
