Capturing effects of filamentous fungi Aspergillus flavus ZJ-1 on microalgae Chlorella vulgaris WZ-1 and the application of their co-integrated fungi-algae pellets for Cu(II) adsorption

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Using filamentous fungi to capture unicellular microalgae is an effective method for microalgae recovery in water treatment. In this study, fungi Aspergillus flavus ZJ-1 and microalgae Chlorella vulgaris WZ-1 were used to investigate the capture effect. The formed fungi-algae pellets (FAPs) showed good adsorption capacity for Cu(II) and the PAFs formed within 2 hours exhibited the highest adsorption capacity.

Hydrogen sulphide regulates the growth of tomato root cells by affecting cell wall biosynthesis under CuO NPs stress

H. Jia et al.

Summary: Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have strong nano-toxic effects on organisms, while hydrogen sulphide (H2S) plays a crucial role in plant response to abiotic stress. This study found that H2S reduces growth inhibition caused by CuO NPs and decreases the accumulation of CuO NPs in roots, leaves, and stems. Additionally, H2S stabilizes microtubules, regulating cell wall development in response to CuO NPs stress and alleviating growth inhibition of tomato seedlings.

Biochar for asphalt modification: A case of high-temperature properties improvement

Feng Ma et al.

Summary: Biochar as an asphalt modifier improves high-temperature performance by enhancing deformation resistance and anti-rutting properties, although it may have a negative impact on low-temperature properties. Control of biochar content can alleviate this issue. FTIR results show that the chemical environment of biochar-modified asphalt binder differs from that of matrix asphalt.

Study on the performance of carbonate-mineralized bacteria combined with eggshell for immobilizing Pb and Cd in water and soil

Ting Wei et al.

Summary: Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an effective approach for remediating water and soil contaminated with heavy metals. In this study, the bacterial isolate UR21 showed high removal rates of Pb and Cd in water through MICP. In soil, the combination of UR21 with urea/eggshell waste reduced the extractable Pb and Cd while increasing soil enzyme activity and pH.

Adsorption and immobilization of soil lead by two phosphate-based biochars and phosphorus release risk assessment

Hongbiao Cui et al.

Summary: Phosphorus-based biochar can effectively immobilize lead in soils and reduce the risk of phosphorus release. The study found that biochars modified with potassium dihydrogen phosphate and hydroxyapatite showed good adsorption capacity and immobilization effectiveness for lead. Hydroxyapatite-modified biochar can effectively reduce the release risk of phosphorus, while potassium dihydrogen phosphate-modified biochar has a higher risk of phosphorus release.

The potential effectiveness of mixed bacteria-loaded biochar/activated carbon to remediate Cd, Pb co-contaminated soil and improve the performance of pakchoi plants

Ting Wei et al.

Summary: A bacteria consortium with optimal Cd, Pb adsorption ability was constructed and immobilized on biochar/activated carbon. The application of bacteria-loaded biochar/activated carbon significantly reduced the extractable Cd and Pb in soil, improved soil quality, and increased plant biomass.

Biochar-induced changes in soil microbial affect species of antimony in contaminated soils

Li Hua et al.

Summary: The application of biochar (BC) has shown potential in remediating antimony (Sb)-contaminated soil, but may also pose a risk of antimony mobilization. Changes in soil bacterial community and Sb oxidation gene induced by BC are closely related to the immobilization or mobilization of Sb.

Rhizosphere iron and manganese-oxidizing bacteria stimulate root iron plaque formation and regulate Cd uptake of rice plants (Oryza sativa L.)

Ting Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that bacterial inoculation stimulates the formation of iron plaque on the root surface of rice plants and has an impact on the elemental content of the plaque, plant growth, and cadmium content. In particular, inoculation with YGL bacteria can help reduce the cadmium content in rice grains.

Phosphate modified hydrochars produced via phytic acid-assisted hydrothermal carbonization for efficient removal of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II)

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: Phosphate modified hydrochars (HTBs) were prepared in this study by hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo sawdust with the presence of phytic acid. The introduction of phosphate onto the biochar sorbents resulted in efficient removal of U(VI), Pb(II) and Cd(II) from various aqueous solutions, with good recyclability after multiple cycles. This work suggests a new strategy for potential application of phosphate-hydrochars in water remediation.

Biochar remediation of soil: linking biochar production with function in heavy metal contaminated soils

A. Taraqqi-A-Kamal et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of biochar on heavy metal contaminated soils and the development of its remediation capacity, but understanding of the mechanistic links between biochar and soil processes remains limited. Factors such as biochar feedstock, pyrolysis conditions, application rate, and soil type determine biochar soil functionality, and further exploration is needed in production routes and benefits. Despite numerous studies on biochar in soils, long-term effects and the necessity for reapplication in soil remediation are poorly understood.

Effect of exogenous silicon and methyl jasmonate on the alleviation of cadmium-induced phytotoxicity in tomato plants

Ting Wei et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of exogenous silicon and methyl jasmonate on alleviating cadmium toxicity in tomato seedlings through a hydroponic experiment. The results showed that the combined application of silicon and methyl jasmonate significantly improved growth inhibition, lipid peroxidation, and impaired photosynthetic pigment accumulation induced by cadmium stress. Moreover, the treatments led to a reduction in cadmium content in tomato tissues, highlighting the beneficial role of silicon and methyl jasmonate in enhancing cadmium tolerance in tomato plants.
