Strengthening-toughening mechanism of cost-saving marine steel plate with 1000 MPa yield strength

Ning Zhao et al.

Summary: A cost-saving marine steel plate with 1000 MPa yield strength was developed based on nano-particles precipitation in a lath martensitic matrix. The optimized mechanical properties were achieved through conventional heat treatment methods. The high strength was attributed to various strengthening mechanisms such as grain refinement, dislocation strengthening, solid solution strengthening, and precipitation strengthening. The excellent impact toughness was due to the unique microstructure characteristics of fine film-like stable austenite and delamination structure.

Analysis of work hardening mechanisms in Quenching and Partitioning steels combining experiments with a 3D micro-mechanical model

Carola Celada-Casero et al.

Summary: This study systematically examines the influence of martensite carbon content and distribution on the overall TRIP strengthening contribution of Q & P processed steels through a combination of crystal plasticity simulations and experimental data analysis. The results show that the strength and work hardening ability of martensite may affect the strengthening contribution from the austenite-to-alpha'(mech) transformation during uniaxial loading.

The effect of isothermal bainitic transformation time on austenite stability of TRIP-980 steel with high ductility

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The effect of two-stage heat treatment on the microstructure and properties of TRIP steel was studied. It was found that the stability of retained austenite is the highest when the IBT time is 4 minutes. This sample achieves a perfect combination of strength and ductility.

Improving mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of 0.5 wt.% C TRIP steel by adjusting retained austenite stability and microstructural constituents

X. X. Dong et al.

Summary: The effect of retained austenite stability and martensite-austenite island/fresh martensite on the mechanical properties, fracture behavior, and corrosion resistance of 0.5 wt.% C TRIP steel was studied. The results show that the morphology and volume fraction of retained austenite play a crucial role in determining the steel's comprehensive mechanical properties, while the presence of martensite-austenite island/fresh martensite and blocky retained austenite can lead to premature crack initiation and deterioration of corrosion resistance.

Investigation of evolving yield surfaces of dual-phase steels

Yong Hou et al.

Summary: This paper describes the evolving yield behavior of dual-phase steels during plastic deformation under various loading paths, using mechanical tests and digital image correlation techniques. Anisotropic yield criteria were applied to analyze the behavior of these steels, showing that non-associated flow rule significantly improved prediction accuracy of both stresses and r-values simultaneously. The evolution of yield stress and plastic potential surfaces of the steels was illustrated by changing parameters in the yield criterion.

Austenite formation and mechanical behavior of a novel TRIP-assisted steel with ferrite/martensite initial structure

Xingli Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution of a newly developed TRIP-assisted steel during an overall annealing cycle, compared with traditional cold-rolled TRIP steel. The results revealed that the new austenite obtained during intercritical annealing was fine-grained and uniformly-distributed, comprising of acicular or blocky structures. The amount of retained austenite increased with Mpre content, with similar stability against martensite transformation during tensile testing.

Microstructure-mechanical property evaluation and deformation mechanism in Al added medium Mn steel processed through intercritical rolling and annealing

Biraj Kumar Sahoo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, and deformation mechanism of medium Mn high Al steel processed through intercritical rolling and subsequent intercritical annealing at different temperatures. The annealed samples exhibited a multi-phase microstructure with varied morphology depending on the annealing temperature. A combination of fine laths and equiaxed ultra-fine grains at 780 degrees C led to exceptional strength and ductility, with sustained four-stage strain hardening during deformation. Multiple work hardening mechanisms were found in the equiaxed and lath-type austenite, contributing to the superior strength-ductility combination.

Martensite transformation of retained austenite with diverse stability and strain partitioning during tensile deformation of a carbide-free Bainitic steel

Feiyu Zhao et al.

Summary: A carbide-free bainitic steel with excellent mechanical properties was studied, and the transformation behavior of austenite to martensite with different morphologies during tensile straining was quantitatively characterized. It was found that different morphologies of austenite transformed at different stages of deformation, affecting the strain partitioning and contributing to the work hardening rate of the steel.

Nanoscale precipitation and ultrafine retained austenite induced high strength-ductility combination in a newly designed low carbon Cu-bearing medium-Mn steel

Bin Hu et al.

Summary: A low carbon Cu-bearing medium-Mn steel was designed and processed through intercritical annealing and tempering, resulting in a significant increase in yield strength and uniform elongation. The microstructure of the sample after tempering consisted of ferrite, ultrafine retained austenite, tempered martensite, and hierarchical Cu particles, with the formation of both large and fine precipitates during different stages of heat treatment. The enhancement of austenite stability during tempering led to an increase in TRIP effect, contributing to superior ductility in the steel.
