A Useful Guide to Lectin Binding: Machine-Learning Directed Annotation of 57 Unique Lectin Specificities

Daniel Bojar et al.

Summary: Glycans play critical roles in biology and medicine, but the specificity of lectins, which are key proteins in glycans binding, has not been well-defined. In this study, machine learning algorithms and expert annotation were used to define the lectin specificity for 57 unique lectins. This research provides important insights into the complex binding features of commercially available lectins.

Engineering Self-Assembling Protein Nanoparticles for Therapeutic Delivery

Audrey Olshefsky et al.

Summary: Although many therapeutic nanomaterials have made remarkable advances, they still face major in vivo delivery barriers. Controlling immunogenicity, optimizing biodistribution, and engineering environmental responsiveness are key challenges. However, self-assembling protein nanoparticles offer a promising solution to these obstacles.

Rapid Development of SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein Receptor-Binding Domain Self-Assembled Nanoparticle Vaccine Candidates

Yin-Feng Kang et al.

Summary: The RBD-conjugated nanoparticles designed in this study show promising immunization effects in mice, with higher neutralizing activity against the virus and more efficient blocking of RBD-ACE2 binding. These results suggest that the vaccine is a competitive candidate, and the carrier nanoparticles could serve as a universal platform for future vaccine development.

Construction, characterization, and immunization of nanoparticles that display a diverse array of influenza HA trimers

Alexander A. Cohen et al.

Summary: Current influenza vaccines do not effectively induce broadly protective immune responses. Mosaic particles presenting multiple forms of HA trimers may enhance immune responses compared to displaying homotypic particles alone.

Complete and cooperative in vitro assembly of computationally designed self-assembling protein nanomaterials

Adam J. Wargacki et al.

Summary: Recent advances in computational methods have enabled the predictive design of self-assembling protein nanomaterials with atomic-level accuracy. Investigation shows that the assembly of these materials is highly cooperative, providing a controllable route for the manufacture of designed protein nanomaterials.

Quadrivalent influenza nanoparticle vaccines induce broad protection

Seyhan Boyoglu-Barnum et al.

Summary: Computational design of nanoparticle immunogens can induce potent and broad antibody responses against diverse influenza viruses, including neutralizing antibody responses to vaccine-matched strains and broadly protective antibody responses to heterologous viruses. These novel vaccines have the potential to replace traditional seasonal vaccines.
