Luteolin promotes pathogen resistance in Caenorhabditis elegans via DAF-2/DAF-16 insulin-like signaling pathway

Yi Xiao et al.

Summary: The DAF-2/DAF-16 insulin-like signaling pathway regulates various aspects of organismal physiology and is conserved throughout evolution. Luteolin, a flavone found in many plants and vegetables, has been shown to have anti-tumor, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. This study found that luteolin increased resistance to both Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens in a dose-dependent manner and promoted host immune response. Furthermore, it was discovered that luteolin activated the DAF-16/FOXO transcription factor and promoted innate immunity through the DAF-2/DAF-16 insulin-like signaling pathway.

Rheological and microstructural properties of polysaccharide obtained from the gelatinous Tremella fuciformis fungus

Jiayan Xu et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to investigate the microstructure and rheological properties of Tremella fuciformis polysaccharide (TFP). The results showed that TFP exhibited an irregular worm-like morphology in aqueous solutions and formed a more extensive entangled network and stiffer chains at higher concentrations. Rheological tests indicated that TFP solutions displayed shear-thinning behavior and viscoelastic properties. Frequency sweep data revealed the solid-like behavior of TFP at high frequencies. Additionally, temperature sweep tests showed that the rheological behavior of TFP was thermally reversible. These findings enhance our understanding of the rheology-microstructure relationship of TFP solutions and can contribute to the broader application of TFP in food processing.

Effect of ultrasonic degradation on the structural feature, physicochemical property and bioactivity of plant and microbial polysaccharides: A review

Zichao Wang et al.

Summary: With their bioactivities including antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune regulation, antitumor and anti-coagulation properties, plant and microbial polysaccharides are widely used in the fields of food, medicine and cosmetics. However, the relationship between structure features and physicochemical properties as well as bioactivities of these polysaccharides remains unclear. Ultrasonic degradation, through mechanical bond breaking and cavitation effects, has the potential to modify the chemical or spatial structures of plant and microbial polysaccharides, thus affecting their physicochemical properties and bioactivities. This review provides an overview of the influence of ultrasonic degradation on the structure features, physicochemical properties and bioactivities of plant and microbial polysaccharides, and highlights the need for attention in the application of ultrasonication for polysaccharide degradation.
