Investigation of cavitation bubble dynamics near a solid wall by high-resolution numerical simulation

Alexander Bussmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of a single cavitation bubble near a horizontal wall during expansion and collapse using a sharp-interface level-set method. A finite-volume formulation with low-dissipation high-order reconstruction schemes is utilized, considering viscosity and surface tension. The simulations are conducted in three-dimensional axi-symmetric space and cover a wide range of initial bubble wall standoff distances. The focus is primarily on the near-wall region.

Study on the liquid jet and shock wave produced by a near-wall cavitation bubble containing a small amount of non-condensable gas

Lei Tian et al.

Summary: To gain a better understanding of the destructive mechanism caused by a near-wall cavitation bubble, the complete process of the bubble collapsing on the nearby wall with the presence of non-condensable gas was numerically investigated. The behavior of the bubble, propagation of shock waves, and types of liquid jets were found to be highly influenced by the stand-off distance. Quantitative analysis of the relationship between pressure impulse and stand-off distance revealed two peaks at the central point.

Experimental research on the collapse dynamics of the cavitation bubble near two spherical particles

Xiaoxiao Zheng et al.

Summary: The collapse dynamics of a cavitation bubble located between two spherical particles of the same size is studied through high-speed photography experiments. The effects of several important parameters, such as bubble size and distance between the bubble and any particle, on the bubble collapse characteristics are revealed based on numerous experimental results. Four representative collapse situations (gyro-shaped, drum-shaped, olive-shaped, and spherical-shaped) are defined, and three critical parameters are given for different situations based on the dimensionless distance between the bubble and any particle, which are respectively 0.27, 1.17, and 1.56. Finally, quantitative research shows that the dimensionless distance and bubble size significantly affect the bubble deformation degree and contraction rates at characteristic bubble wall positions.

Thermodynamic Behavior and Energy Transformation Mechanism of the Multi-Period Evolution of Cavitation Bubbles Collapsing near a Rigid Wall: A Numerical Study

Tianhao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a compressible two-phase solver considering thermodynamics and phase transitions is developed and validated using OpenFOAM (version v2112). The results show that the shock wave emitted by the collapse of cavitation bubbles impacts the wall, increasing the fluid temperature along the wall. The effect of the liquid jet on wall temperature depends on the initial stand-off distance between the bubble and the wall. Furthermore, an energy transformation mechanism considering the internal bubble energy is proposed.

Numerical Study of the Emission of Acoustic Energy of Single Collapsing Vapor Bubble near a Rigid Wall

Hangbo Duan et al.

Summary: A compressible two-phase solver considering phase transition and thermodynamic effects was developed to study the dynamics of single cavitation bubble collapse near a rigid wall. The accuracy of the method was verified by comparing with experimental results, and the emission process of acoustic energy during the collapse was discussed. The study also found that the bubble-wall distance has a significant effect on the amplitude of acoustic energy, with a critical value.

Experimental and numerical investigations of the collapse of a laser-induced cavitation bubble near a solid wall

Jia-yun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the morphology of cavitation bubble collapse near the wall was experimentally studied using a laser cavitation bubble photogrammetry system with nanosecond-micron space-time resolution. The experimental results were validated by numerical simulation using the OpenFOAM code. The study showed that the cavitation bubble collapses in an axial symmetric heart shape near the solid wall, with a micro-jet directing the bubble towards the wall and a counter-jet driving the bubble away from the wall during the rebound stage.

Cavitation bubble collapse in a vicinity of a rigid wall with a gas entrapping hole

Yurong Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of a gas entrapping hole on the dynamic behavior of a laser-induced bubble collapse on a rigid wall. The study finds that the presence of the gas entrapping hole changes the collapse modes and affects the jet formation, bubble migration, and oscillation period. It shows promising potential for reducing cavitation erosion on the wall surface.

Dynamics of a Laser-Induced Bubble above the Flat Top of a Solid Cylinder-Mushroom-Shaped Bubbles and the Fast Jet

Max Koch et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of a laser-induced bubble on top of a solid cylinder through experimental and numerical methods. The research findings show that when the bubble is generated near the flat top of the cylinder and its maximum radius exceeds that of the flat top surface, it collapses into a mushroom shape with a footing on the cylinder, a long stem, and a hat-like cap. Depending on the size and distance of the bubble to the top of the cylinder, the cap may collapse, resulting in a thin, fast liquid jet into the stem.
