Removal of drug dexamethasone from aqueous matrices using low frequency ultrasound: Kinetics, transformation products, and effect of microplastics

Alexandra A. Ioannidi et al.

Summary: Sonochemical oxidation was used to degrade the drug dexamethasone (Dex). The oxidation reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics at 20 kHz and increased with applied ultrasound power density. Acoustic cavitation at 71 W/L could remove 500 μg/L of dexamethasone from ultrapure water within less than 60 min. The presence of hydroxyl radicals and the reaction on the gas-liquid interface were found to be crucial in the decomposition process.

Sonochemical fabrication of gradient antibacterial materials based on Cu-Zn alloy

Mirna Sabbouh et al.

Summary: In this study, we focus on the use of ultrasonic treatment to create materials with gradient changes in chemical or physical properties. We demonstrate the possibility of fabricating novel materials with biocidal activity using a simple and inexpensive Cu-Zn alloy. The green preparative technique of sonication in an alkali solution leads to a visual change and differentiation of particles into three fractions. Analysis techniques such as XRD, SEM, EBSD, XPS, and DPASV were used to study the particles and show a redistribution of copper ions that affects the antibacterial properties of the prepared material.

Effect of ultrasound assisted cleaning on pesticide removal and quality characteristics of Vitis vinifera leaves

Alev Yuksel Aydar et al.

Summary: This study examined the removal of pesticides (acetamiprid, deltamethrin, and pyridaben) and the improvement in physicochemical quality of vine leaves (Vitis vinifera) using ultrasonic and traditional cleaning methods. The results showed that after a 10-minute ultrasonic cleaning at 37 kHz, acetamiprid, deltamethrin, and pyridaben were reduced by 54.76%, 58.22%, and 54.55%, respectively. Furthermore, the total phenolic content in the vine leaves increased to 13.45 mg GAE/g DW compared to control samples, but there were no significant differences in DPPH radical scavenging activity. After 15 minutes of conventional cleaning, the total chlorophyll and total carotenoid content of the leaves were found to be the lowest among all samples.

Realizing Highly Efficient Sonodynamic Bactericidal Capability through the Phonon-Electron Coupling Effect Using Two-Dimensional Catalytic Planar Defects

Congyang Mao et al.

Summary: Confering catalytic defects in sonosensitizers is crucial for enhancing sonodynamic therapy. In this study, 2D catalytic planar defects were designed within Ti3C2 sheets to overcome this challenge. These planar slip dislocations with abundant Ti3+ species can activate O-2, resulting in a significant amount of O-1(2) generation and a high bactericidal capability under ultrasound stimulation. It was found that the 2D catalytic planar defects can intervene in electron transfer through the phonon drag effect, leading to a dramatic decrease in O-2 activation energy.

Paulina Chytrosz-Wrobel et al.

Summary: The therapeutic function of biomaterial surface can be improved by the controlled release of biologically active molecules. Ultrasonic-assisted formation of nanoparticles with controlled size and morphology can be used for such functionalization. This study reported the synthesis of fluorouracil nanoparticles, a bioactive molecule used in anticancer therapy, and revealed the molecular-level picture of the cavitation bubble interface where the enrichment of fluorouracil molecules takes place. The proposed mechanism can be applied to other biologically relevant molecules, suggesting that the sonochemical method can be used for the controlled formation of their nanoparticles. The results indicate the potential practical implications of tailoring the surface of polymeric biomaterials via the embedment of nanoparticles as drug delivery systems.

TiO2-supported Au144 nanoclusters for enhanced sonocatalytic performance

Kouhei Kawamura et al.

Summary: The study investigated the sonocatalytic activity of Au nanoclusters supported on TiO2 nanoparticles. It was found that Au-144 nanoclusters enhanced the production of hydroxyl radicals by acting as an electron trap and enhancing charge separation mechanism, leading to higher catalytic activity compared to Au-25 nanoclusters on TiO2 nanoparticles. This enhanced sonocatalytic activity was attributed to the implosive collapse of cavitation bubbles generating heat and sonoluminescence which helped in the formation of electron-hole pairs on the Au-144/TiO2 catalyst.
