Modeling acoustic emissions and shock formation of cavitation bubbles

Fabian Denner et al.

Summary: Despite limited attention to models predicting the acoustic emissions and shock formation of pressure-driven bubbles, a numerical framework using a Lagrangian wave tracking approach has been proposed to accurately predict pressure and velocity around pressure-driven bubbles. Validation and testing show good agreement with solutions of the full Navier-Stokes equations and various excitation regimes, demonstrating the effectiveness of the new numerical framework.

Study on the liquid jet and shock wave produced by a near-wall cavitation bubble containing a small amount of non-condensable gas

Lei Tian et al.

Summary: To gain a better understanding of the destructive mechanism caused by a near-wall cavitation bubble, the complete process of the bubble collapsing on the nearby wall with the presence of non-condensable gas was numerically investigated. The behavior of the bubble, propagation of shock waves, and types of liquid jets were found to be highly influenced by the stand-off distance. Quantitative analysis of the relationship between pressure impulse and stand-off distance revealed two peaks at the central point.

A unified theory for bubble dynamics

A-Man Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, we proposed a novel theory for the dynamics of oscillating bubbles. This theory takes into consideration various factors such as boundaries, bubble interaction, ambient flow field, gravity, bubble migration, fluid properties, and surface tension. We validated the theory with experimental data and compared it with classical theoretical models, demonstrating its advantages. Additionally, we applied the theory to model complex multi-cycle bubble interaction and gained new insights into inter-bubble energy transfer and pressure wave coupling.

The Effect of Surface Geometry of Solid Wall on the Collapse of a Cavitation Bubble

Yurong Sun et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to examine the impact of different surface geometric conditions on the dynamic behavior characteristics of laser-induced bubble collapse. The findings reveal that the dimensionless ratio gamma plays a vital role in influencing the cavitation shape during bubble collapse. Different surface geometries without gas have no significant effect on the collapse time of cavitation bubbles. However, for surfaces containing gas, the movement direction of the bubble changes significantly during collapse, and the collapse time appears to be independent of the dimensionless ratio gamma.

Summary: This paper presents a numerical analysis of the cavitation inception speed (CIS) decision procedure for tip vortex cavitation (TVC), emphasizing noise as the most prominent characteristic. The cavitation noise from the propeller is simulated and obtained from bubble dynamics, with nuclei input data from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations used for the CIS decision. The proposed procedure is demonstrated to be useful by applying it to different propeller geometries and analyzing various aspects of cavitation phenomena.

Numerical study of effects of stand-off distance and gravity on large scale bubbles near a breach

Ming He et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical model based on the Eulerian finite element method is used to investigate the coupling between large-scale bubbles and breaches in ship structures under the influence of underwater explosions. The standoff distance is found to determine the pattern of water influx, while gravity affects the volume and velocity of the incoming water. Initially, gravity has little influence on the ingress process, but as bubbles rise and displace water, the effect of gravity becomes more pronounced, causing a sudden increase in water influx volume.

Laser-induced cavitation bubbles and shock waves in water near a concave surface

Tomaz Pozar et al.

Summary: The interaction between cavitation structures and shock waves following nanosecond laser breakdown in water near a concave surface was visualized using high-speed shadowgraphy and schlieren cinematography. Unlike near flat or convex surfaces, a concave surface refocuses shock waves, causing secondary cavitation near the acoustic focus triggered by the shock wave released during the first main bubble collapse. The observed effects are particularly significant in scenarios where cavities collapse near indented surfaces, such as in cavitation peening, cavitation erosion, and ophthalmology.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biofouling roughness on hydrodynamic performance, particularly on tip vortex cavitation for marine propellers. The results showed that applying roughness on the suction side of the propeller blade tips can effectively mitigate tip vortex cavitation with a moderate level of loss in propeller efficiency. The cavitation volume reduction, mainly due to tip vortex cavitation mitigation, ranged from 6-38% in model scale and 4-10% in full-scale propellers under different flow conditions.

Summary: This study presents validation simulations of the KCD-193 model propeller focusing on performance, cavitation, and erosion properties. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques using RANS and DES models were applied to investigate wake effects on cavitation and erosion intensity. Results showed that the RANS model was more suitable for predicting erosion intensity compared to the DES model, and a decrease in cavitation number did not always result in increased erosion intensity, highlighting the need for further research.
