Integrating Domain Knowledge Into Deep Networks for Lung Ultrasound With Applications to COVID-19

Oz Frank et al.

Summary: Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a cheap, safe, and non-invasive imaging modality that can be performed at patient bed-side. However, the lack of trained personnel for interpreting LUS frames limits its wide adoption. To address this, a framework for training deep artificial neural networks is proposed to interpret LUS, by integrating domain knowledge into deep neural networks through the input of anatomical features and LUS artifacts. The framework allows for a unified treatment of LUS frames and has demonstrated efficacy in COVID-19 severity assessment.

Deep Learning-Based Classification of Reduced Lung Ultrasound Data From COVID-19 Patients

Umair Khan et al.

Summary: The application of lung ultrasound (LUS) imaging has gained significant interest in the diagnosis of lung diseases. This article evaluates the performance of a deep learning algorithm using LUS data with varying pixel and gray-level resolution. The results indicate that the automated scoring accuracy remains stable with intensity quantization, but shows variation with spatial down-sampling. The findings suggest that the prognostic agreement can still be achieved with reduced data size.

Investigating training-test data splitting strategies for automated segmentation and scoring of COVID-19 lung ultrasound images

Roshan Roshankhah et al.

Summary: The importance of ultrasound in point-of-care lung assessment, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, is highlighted. A proposed automatic segmentation method using a convolutional neural network aims to stage the progression of the disease. The study evaluates different test-training strategies and sheds light on efficient approaches and common challenges associated with automatic segmentation methods.
