Non-contact microcrack detection via nonlinear Lamb wave mixing and laser line arrays

Santhakumar Sampath et al.

Summary: In this study, a non-contact nonlinear Lamb wave mixing technique based on laser line-array excitation is developed for microcrack detection in plate-like structures. The developed system allows the user to selectively implement the Lamb wave mode at the desired input frequency by adjusting the optical lens. Experimental validation shows that the proposed system can locate and detect microcracks in plate-like structures.

An improved nonlinear ultrasonic technique for detecting and monitoring impact induced damage in composite plates

H. Alnuaimi et al.

Summary: An improved technique for sensing damage initiation and progression in thermoplastic resin composite plate specimens was presented in this study. The new method includes introducing the narrow band SPC-I technique, using non-permanently adhered gel-coupled PZT transducers, and employing higher sampling rate equipment. This improved technique provides more reliable and consistent results in monitoring damage progression.

Use of a non-collinear wave mixing technique to image internal microscale damage in concrete

Jin-Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the feasibility of imaging internal microscale damage in concrete components using a non-collinear wave mixing technique. By adjusting the positions of the incident waves and utilizing wave speeds in concrete for scanning and imaging, the viability of the proposed technique is confirmed.

Imaging the delamination in multilayer structure

Guangyuan Gao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a systematic methodology called Integrated Reflected-Transmitted wave-based Imaging (IRTI) for achieving interlaminar delamination imaging of multilayer structures using interface wave. The methodology involves extracting delamination information, designing probe layout, adopting different algorithms for reflected wave-based and transmitted wave-based imaging, and fusing the two imaging results to obtain accurate delamination shape and location. Experimental results on double-layer plates with different delamination shapes validate the effectiveness of IRTI.

Characterization of interfacial property of a two-layered plate using a nonlinear low-frequency Lamb wave approach

Han Chen et al.

Summary: This work investigates the feasibility of using a nonlinear low-frequency Lamb wave approach for characterizing the interfacial property of a two-layered plate. The approximate phase-velocity matching in the low-frequency region can still guarantee the cumulative second harmonic generation of primary Lamb wave propagation. Numerical analysis and experimental measurement show the potential of using the SHG effect of low-frequency Lamb wave propagation to characterize minor changes in the interfacial properties.

An elastodynamic reciprocity theorem-based closed-form solution to second harmonic generation of lamb waves by a fatigue crack: Theory & experimental validation

Lei Xu et al.

Summary: The study presents a new theoretical model based on the elastodynamic reciprocity theorem to interpret the modulation mechanism of fatigue crack with 'breathing' attributes on Lamb wave propagation, shedding light on the nonlinear interaction of GUWs with small-scale damage. The model provides insights into the generation of second harmonics in Lamb waves and defines a nonlinear damage indicator quantitatively calibrated by the crack-induced second harmonic. Finite element simulation and proof-of-concept experimental validation demonstrate the accuracy of the analytical model for evaluating damage onset.
