Assessment of gas explosion risk in underground spaces adjacent to a gas pipeline

Yuanzhi Li et al.

Summary: A method for evaluating the explosion risk in underground spaces adjacent to gas pipelines was proposed in this study, considering the possibility and consequences of explosions. The experiment confirmed that the explosion overpressure of manhole was not sufficient to cause harm to people, and highlighted the importance of flame and fragmentation damage in underground spaces.

Vented gas explosion overpressure calculation based on a multi-layered neural network

Yann Gregoire et al.

Summary: The article discusses a case of gas explosion occurring in a geometrically simple enclosure with a vent, and introduces a new simulation approach based on an artificial neural network (ANN). Calculations on a vented explosion database showed surprisingly good results with this method.

A numerical study of gas explosion with progressive venting in a utility tunnel

Di Chen et al.

Summary: A numerical model of a progressive vented gas explosion is presented, which utilizes a CFD tool, correlation analysis, and an artificial neural network (ANN). The model is validated using experimental results and shows differences between fixed and progressive vented gas explosions. The study also demonstrates the significant impact of obstacles inside the tunnel on the flow field.

A risk-based optimal pressure relief opening design for gas explosions in underground utility tunnels

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a risk-based design for pressure relief openings (PRO) in underground utility tunnels (UUTs) to explore optimal layout configurations. FLACS simulations show that PROs can significantly reduce maximum explosion overpressure, with risk analysis providing an ALARP reference for design.

Protective effect of unbonded prestressed ultra-high performance reinforced concrete slab against gas explosion in buried utility tunnel

Yekai Yang et al.

Summary: The protective effect of unbonded prestressed ultra-high performance reinforced concrete slab against gas explosion was investigated, showing excellent performance in resisting gas explosions. Gas explosions may have little effect on the circular section pipeline in the independent cabin.

Predication of the residual axial load capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC column subjected to blast loading using artificial neural network

Zhong-Xian Li et al.

Summary: In this study, two genetic algorithm optimized backpropagation neural networks were established to predict the ratio of residual axial load capacity to the maximum axial load capacity of non- and CFRP-strengthened RC columns under different conditions, and to conduct damage assessments. One model was used to predict the axial load capacity of damaged RC columns induced by blast load, while the other model was used for post-explosion damage assessment.

Large-scale experimental investigation of the effects of gas explosions in underdrains

Longfei Hou et al.

Summary: This study involved the construction and explosion of a large-scale underdrain, as well as detailed investigations of the damaging impacts of a gas explosion, providing an experimental foundation for similarity modeling and infrastructural designs. The experiment determined that a gas explosion consists of two stages, the precursor wave and the combustion wave, which significantly affect the extent of damage to cover plates.
