Local buckling characteristic of hollow ?-type steel-concrete composite support in hilly-gully region of loess tunnel

Zhichao Wang et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the effect of longitudinal pressure bias on the stability of pi-type Steel-Concrete Composite Support (SCCS) arch in a loess tunnel. Through in-situ monitoring of the Dayoushan Tunnel, the deformation and pressure from surrounding soil affected by the U-shaped terrain were analyzed. The results show that the longitudinal pressure bias has a significant impact on the out-of-plane stability of the pi-type SCCS arch.

Failure mechanical behaviors and prevention methods of shaft lining in China

Ziqi Li et al.

Summary: The paper investigates shaft lining damage accidents in the Huanghuai area of China and concludes that shaft lining damage has regional similarity, concentration of failure time, and similarity of geological conditions. The primary failure mode of shaft lining is shear failure. The analytical solution of shaft lining force is obtained using the superposition principle by considering various stress factors. The Coulomb-Neville criterion is introduced to verify the theoretical calculation of damaged shafts, and grouting reinforcement, composite shaft lining, and unloading secondary lining methods are effective in protecting the shaft lining.

Study on Construction Response Characteristics of Large Cross-Section Tunnel Crossing Huge Karst Cave Backfill

Yunteng Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, a numerical simulation model for backfilling a large karst cave through a large cross-section tunnel was established using FEA software MIDAS. The distribution characteristics and change rules of the displacement field, stress field, horizontal support stress, and plastic zone of the tunnel surrounding rock and backfill were explored. The results showed that the tunnel excavation led to increased displacement of the surrounding rock and deterioration of the plastic zone, highlighting the need for strengthening and monitoring. The study also analyzed the site monitoring results and found good agreement between the numerical calculations and the actual data.

Experimental study of face stability for shield tunnels in sandy cobble strata of different densities

Qiguang Di et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of relative density on the stability of shield tunnel working face in sandy cobble stratum. Geomechanical model tests were conducted for shield tunnels excavating through loose, medium dense, and dense samples. The results reveal the variation of earth pressure and lateral pressure coefficient during tunneling and explore the failure zone and soil arch height. It is found that relative density has a greater effect on horizontal earth pressure and increasing it can enhance the stability of the tunnel face. The existing methods for analyzing the instability area in different relative densities have deviations.

Corrosion cracking behavior of reinforced concrete under freeze-thaw cycles

Xiguang Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental and theoretical study on the corrosion cracking behavior of reinforced concrete under freeze-thaw cycles. Accelerated corrosion tests were conducted on reinforced concrete specimens subjected to freeze-thaw cycles. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) test results showed that the cracking positions on the concrete surface were randomly distributed. The critical corrosion ratio of reinforcing bars decreased as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased. The relationship between the reinforcing bar critical corrosion ratio at cover cracking under freeze-thaw environment and the thick-walled double cylinder theory was established and validated with experimental results.

Failure analysis and countermeasures of a tunnel constructed in loose granular stratum by shallow tunnelling method

Yiwen Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, the failure problems encountered in tunnels constructed by shallow tunneling method in loose granular strata were successfully addressed using a tunnel construction project on the Sichuan-Tibet 318 Highway Line in China as an example. The failure phenomena, characteristics, and modes were systematically analyzed, and corresponding construction countermeasures were proposed. The results showed that the proposed countermeasures had a remarkable effect, providing valuable references for tunnel design, construction, and disaster control in similar areas.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of new tunnelling on existing tunnels using a centrifuge model test. The results show that the soil pressures and bending movements of the existing tunnels behave differently due to the new tunnel excavation. The joint deformation of the existing tunnels can be classified into translation, rotation, or a combination of both.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: The study used centrifuge model tests to investigate the effects of new tunneling on existing tunnels, including surface settlements, soil pressures, bending movements, and joint behaviors. The results showed that the volume loss from new tunnel excavation was smaller than the soil volume moving into the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the segmental lining model was larger than that of the composite lining model. Additionally, the soil pressures on different positions of the existing tunnel behaved differently, and the bending movements of the existing tunnels decreased due to new tunnel excavation.

Model test study on the stability of cobble strata during shield under-crossing

Qingtao Lin et al.

Summary: A test platform for earth pressure balance shield was designed and manufactured to conduct tests on shield under-crossing existing tunnels in cobble strata. Surface settlement, earth pressure on existing tunnels, and circumferential strain of existing tunnels were measured to reveal collapse mechanism of cobble soil around existing tunnels and deformation features of existing horseshoe and rectangular tunnels.
