Bi-objective optimal design of an electromagnetic shunt damper for energy harvesting and vibration control

Ruqi Sun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a bi-objective optimization methodology for electromagnetic shunt dampers (EMSD) to simultaneously maximize energy harvesting and suppress resonance vibration. By designing an EMSD with opposing magnet pairs configuration, both design objectives can be achieved in a single-degree-of-freedom system and a dynamic vibration absorber. The electromechanical transduction factor of the EMSD can be tuned to achieve both objectives simultaneously in different systems.

High performance wide frequency band triboelectric nanogenerator based on mu tilayer wave superstructure for harvesting vibration energy

Song Tang et al.

Summary: Efficiently converting random vibration energy into electricity is significant for local power supply in the internet of things. However, the conversion efficiency of energy harvesters is limited by their intrinsic frequency. In this study, a multi-layered, wavy super-structured triboelectric nanogenerator (SS-TENG) is designed to improve output performance through charge excitation. The SS-TENG, with a steel sheet acting as both an electrode and a supporter, achieves a high volume charge density and widened resonant frequency range. It can sustainably drive sensors by harvesting vibration energy, providing an effective strategy for energy harvesting and frequency response broadening.

Broadband vibration energy harvest of an elastic beam by employing a type of intelligent elastic device

Yuhao Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of designing and manufacturing an intelligent elastic device for broadband vibration energy harvesting and studies its potential application. Through theoretical study of the working principle and experimental investigation of the influence of the intelligent elastic device on the broadband vibration energy harvesting of the elastic beam, it is found that the intelligent elastic device can effectively harvest the vibration energy of the elastic beam by changing its vibration characteristics. The working state changes of the intelligent elastic device significantly influence the output voltage responses of the beam subjected to single-frequency excitation in the effective working region. It can effectively harvest the vibration energy of the elastic beam under different excitation frequencies, and a control flow for the intelligent elastic device is proposed to promote its engineering application.

Parametric excitation as a cause of clutch judder: theoretical study and experimental validation

Manuel Tentarelli et al.

Summary: This paper reveals that clutch judder can also be caused by parametric excitation, in addition to stick-slip phenomena, negative gradient of the coefficient of friction, and geometric disturbances. This new understanding overcomes the limitations of existing explanations as it allows for clutch judder to occur at high slip speeds, with positive gradients of the friction coefficient, and at excitation frequencies different from the system's eigenfrequencies. The analysis presented in this study can be used to solve judder problems in existing transmissions and prevent clutch judder in the design phase of other transmissions.

Wearable bistable triboelectric nanogenerator for harvesting torsional vibration energy from human motion

Dongguo Tan et al.

Summary: A wearable bistable triboelectric nanogenerator (WBTENG) with a bistable stiffness feature is proposed for efficient torsional vibration energy harvesting from human motion. The electrical performance of the WBTENG is investigated, including its dependence on dynamic behaviors and its response to different excitation frequencies and load resistances. The WBTENG is proven to switch between interwell and intrawell oscillations, and can generate a peak power of 3.39 mW at 3 Hz. It is capable of powering a light-emitting diode (LED) array and driving a temperature sensor under human motions.

High performance wide frequency band triboelectric nanogenerator based on multilayer wave superstructure for harvesting vibration energy

Song Tang et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-layered, wavy super-structured-triboelectric nanogenerator (SS-TENG) is designed to efficiently convert random vibration energy into electricity. The output performance of the SS-TENG is greatly improved by combining the charge excitation mechanism, and the volume charge density can reach up to 129 mCmiddotm(-3). The resonant frequency width of the SS-TENG can be widened by changing the parameters of the superstructure, providing a effective strategy for harvesting vibration energy and broadening frequency response.

Frequency entrainment and suppression of stick-slip vibrations in a 3 DoF discontinuous disc brake model

Bipin Balaram et al.

Summary: This work investigates the suppression of stick-slip vibrations in disc brakes by applying a small-amplitude normal harmonic force on the brake pad. The study identifies the frequency range of the normal force that leads to the suppression. A 3 DoF discontinuous model of the disc brake is used, and it is shown that the normal harmonic force can entrain the non-smooth limit cycle. Different frequency intervals with harmonic, super-harmonic, and sub-harmonic entrainments are identified, and the initiation and termination of these entrainment intervals are associated with Neimark-Sacker bifurcations. It is also demonstrated that the discontinuity induced grazing-sliding mechanism brings about these bifurcations, leading to the suppression of stick-slip vibrations.

Brake squeal of a high-speed train for different friction block configurations

Y. K. Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of friction block configuration on brake squeal of a high-speed train. Test results showed significant impact of friction block configuration on noise performance of the brake system. Finite element analysis revealed brake squeal caused by mode coupling, with different configurations leading to different noise performances. Full-scale finite element simulation indicated that a relatively even distribution of interfacial contact pressure in the friction block configuration resulted in lower squeal propensity.
