Tool wear and its effect on the surface integrity and fatigue behavior in high-speed ultrasonic peening milling of Inconel 718

Xiaoming Yin et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic-assisted technology has been found to be effective for milling Inconel 718. This study compared tool life and wear mechanisms between high-speed Ultrasonic Peening Milling (UPM) and Conventional Milling (CM) under different wear states. The analysis showed a 32.5% increase in tool life in UPM due to lower tool wear compared to CM. More importantly, UPM significantly improved surface quality and fatigue life with an average increase of 4-17 times.

Online measurement of the elastic recovery value of machined surface in milling titanium alloy

Panling Huang et al.

Summary: This study designed a new online measurement system based on digital image correlation to monitor the elastic recovery behavior in the milling process of titanium alloy. Through orthogonal milling experiments and detailed design, the calculation method of elastic recovery value for the machined surface was obtained, and the optimization method of cutting parameters with the minimum elastic recovery value in titanium alloy milling was also obtained.

An innovative study on high-performance milling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic by combining ultrasonic vibration assistance and optimized tool structures

Zhefei Sun et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a sharpening milling CFRP strategy by combining ultrasonic vibration and optimized tool structure. The cutting mechanisms of ultrasonic vibration and tool structure are analyzed, and the milling performance of the optimized tool is verified. Ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling (UVM) with the optimized tool is found to significantly reduce cutting force, cutting temperature, surface defects, and surface roughness, making it an efficient and low damages milling strategy for CFRP.

Effects of high-pressure coolant on cooling mechanism in high-speed ultrasonic vibration cutting interfaces

Xiangyu Zhang et al.

Summary: High-pressure coolant (HPC) can effectively reduce cutting temperature. In high-speed ultrasonic vibration cutting (HUVC) with HPC, the cutting speed on titanium alloys can reach 400 m/min due to the significant reduction in cutting temperature. However, the advantages of HUVC with HPC diminish rapidly as the cutting speed increases.

Observation on the behavior of ultrasonic micro-hammer and its effects on the deep drawing process: Numerical simulation and experimental study

Ehsan Malekipour et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combination of ultrasonic vibration with metal forming processes, specifically focusing on Ultrasonically Assisted Deep Drawing (UADD) and its effect on forming force and thickness distribution. Experimental tests were conducted to validate a numerical model, which showed that UV application under micro-hammer conditions significantly reduces forming force but has detrimental effects on thickness distribution of the sheet.

Characteristics and mechanism in ultrasonic vibration-assisted deformation of Ni-based superalloy thin-walled sheet by quasi-in-situ EBSD

Guangda Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation characteristics and mechanism of Ni-based superalloy thin-walled sheet under ultrasonic vibration-assisted (UVA) forming. Experimental results show that ultrasonic vibration reduces the stress response and facilitates grain rotation and dislocation slip, thereby promoting plastic deformation. A new perspective of the acoustic softening mechanism considering grain rotation and dislocation slip is proposed based on the experimental results.

Summary: Investigating the microstructural evolution of the machined surface is important for understanding microscopic plastic deformation and reducing work hardening. This study proposed a method to build a three-dimensional cutting model and used a temperature-displacement coupling algorithm for simulation. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified through comparing simulation results with experimental data. The influence of different parameters on the surface performance was also analyzed.

Effect of radial high-speed ultrasonic vibration cutting on machining performance during finish turning of hardened steel

Zhenlong Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, radial high-speed ultrasonic vibration cutting (R-HUVC) process was adopted to improve the machining performance of finishing hardened steel. Experimental results showed that R-HUVC can achieve lower cutting force, longer tool life, and better surface roughness compared to conventional cutting (CC). It was demonstrated that R-HUVC can be applied to high-speed machining for the finish turning of hardened steel due to its improved machining performance.

Study on formation mechanism and regularity of residual stress in ultrasonic vibration grinding of high strength alloy steel

Jun Wen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation mechanism of residual stress in Ultrasonic Vibration Grinding (UVG) and establishes a prediction model, providing a basis for further research on residual stress in UVG. The correlation law between processing parameters and residual stress is obtained, showing that UVG can reduce grinding temperature and retain greater compressive residual stress on the workpiece surface compared to common grinding.
