Fabrication, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Al-based metal matrix-TiB2-HEA hybrid composite

M. Chinababu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fabrication and properties of a metal matrix composite using a cast Al-Si-Mg alloy (LM25) matrix with two variants of particle reinforcements, TiB2 and CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA). The composites were successfully fabricated through the stir-casting process and characterized using TEM, SEM, and XRD analysis. The mechanical properties were found to be improved with the addition of the reinforcement phase, demonstrating higher tensile strength and similar ductility compared to the base metal. The LM25-2 wt% TiB2-3 wt% HEA composite exhibited the highest tensile strength due to the presence of TiB2 and HEA particles and the high dislocation density.

Microstructure and properties of FeCoNiCrMn and Al2O3 hybrid particle-reinforced aluminum matrix composites fabricated by microwave sintering

H. M. Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different weight fractions of Al2O3 micro/nanoparticles on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanisms of dual-phase-reinforced AMCs. The hybrid particles of HEA and Al2O3 synergistically delayed interfacial crack propagation and resulted in significantly improved hardness, yield strength, and compressive strength compared to single HEA-reinforced samples. Orowan strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and thermal mismatch strengthening were identified as the main strengthening mechanisms in the composites.

Investigating microstructural and mechanical behavior of stir-squeeze cast TiO2-SiC/Al6082 bimodal hybrid composites

Subodh Kumar et al.

Summary: Greater advantages of employing hybrid reinforced advanced aluminum matrix composites have been highlighted recently. In this study, Al6082 bimodal hybrid composites embedded with different proportions of SiC and TiO2 particles were fabricated using a modified stir-squeeze cast technique. Microstructural analysis revealed that the properties of the composites deteriorated when the content of SiC exceeded 3 wt.%. The incorporation of 3 wt.% SiC and 0.5 wt.% TiO2 resulted in the maximum enhancement of mechanical properties in Al6082 alloy.

Crystallographic orientation and wear characteristics of TiN, SiC, Nb embedded Al7075 composite

V Chakkravarthy et al.

Summary: The wear resistant TiN, SiC, Nb blended Al7075 composite fabricated by ultrasonic assisted squeeze casting route exhibited high compressive residual stresses, grain refinement, and improved wear resistance. The segregated reinforcements across grain boundaries played a positive role in enhancing tribological performance by Zenner pinning mechanism and Orowan load bearing effect, facilitating easy sliding by attenuating the impact of contact stresses.

Mechanically alloyed high entropy alloys: existing challenges and opportunities

Akshay Kumar et al.

Summary: High entropy alloys (HEAs) were first reported in 2004, but significant progress in this field has been made since 2010 due to their unique properties and the ability to form various compositions. Researchers initially focused on equiatomic HEAs and later shifted to non-equiatomic alloys. Mechanical alloying and sintering were identified as effective methods for processing HEAs. This review discusses the properties, functional properties, and applications of mechanically alloyed HEAs, as well as the existing challenges and opportunities.

Tribological behavior of high-entropy alloy particle reinforced aluminum matrix composites and their key impacting factors

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: Al0.5CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy particles reinforced aluminum matrix composites (HEAps/AMCs) with various reinforcement additions were fabricated and their wear properties were investigated. It was found that a moderate range of reinforcement exhibited lower coefficient of friction and wear rate compared to the matrix alloy. The HEA particles hindered plastic deformation and improved the crack resistance of the composites through tight interface and interaction with dislocations.

Interfacial Characteristics and Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Al0.5CoCrFeNi High-Entropy Alloy Particles Reinforced Al Matrix Composites

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al0.5CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy particles reinforced aluminum matrix composites (HEAps/AMCs) fabricated by ultrasonic casting technique. It was found that incoherent FCC phases and tiny coherent L1(2) nanophases were precipitated inside the matrix and around the interface between Al and HEAps, respectively. The introduction of different contents of HEAps improved the strength and hardness of the composites, but excessive HEAps had a detrimental effect on the tensile properties.
