Nutrient regime modulates drought response patterns of three temperate tree species

Gerhard Schmied et al.

Summary: Against the backdrop of global change, droughts are projected to increase and threaten forest ecosystems worldwide. This study examined the drought response patterns of three major temperate tree species in Germany. The results showed that nutrient regime, drought frequency, and hydraulic conditions were the main determinants of drought responses, with pronounced differences among species. The study emphasized the relevance of water availability and nutrient supply for tree resilience under extreme drought stress, and highlighted the impacts of persistent climatic changes on tree species.

Competition-based mortality and tree losses. An essential component of net primary productivity

Hans Pretzsch et al.

Summary: This study reveals that in unmanaged forests, tree density decreases over time due to competition and natural mortality. The net growth rate of trees also decreases with age, while the mortality rate remains relatively stable. These findings have significant implications for understanding and managing forest stands.

Physiological recovery of tree water relations upon drought release-response of mature beech and spruce after five years of recurrent summer drought

Summary: The frequency and duration of drought stress events are increasing due to climate change. While the mechanisms of drought acclimation have been extensively studied, the recovery processes remain poorly understood. This study investigated the recovery and resilience of Norway spruce and European beech after a period of drought, and found that the recovery time was longer for spruce than for beech.

Tree mortality response to drought-density interactions suggests opportunities to enhance drought resistance

John B. Bradford et al.

Summary: The study suggests that competition for water influences tree mortality during drought, and reducing forest density can decrease drought-induced tree mortality. High temperatures and drought exacerbate mortality rates, while areas with unusually wet conditions experience lower mortality.

Summary: This study aimed to test whether the 2018 European megadrought altered the growth partitioning among tree sizes and species. The results showed sensitivity to forest type, sample size, target variable, and range of tree sizes, with certain trees experiencing greater negative growth impacts post-drought.

Tracing drought effects from the tree to the stand growth in temperate and Mediterranean forests: insights and consequences for forest ecology and management

Hans Pretzsch et al.

Summary: The study finds that the effects of drought on tree and stand growth may differ, as stand responses include interactions and feedbacks that may buffer or aggravate what is observed at the individual tree level. By analyzing long-term experiment data, it reveals the relationship between dominant tree growth outcomes and stand-level behavior, showing that the drought resistance of dominant trees may deviate from the overall sensitivity of the stand.

Interaction of drought- and pathogen-induced mortality in Norway spruce and Scots pine

Mireia Gomez-Gallego et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological processes leading to drought-induced mortality in Norway spruce and Scots pine saplings infected with Heterobasidion annosum. The results showed that pathogen infection decreased carbon reserves in spruce, reducing their ability to cope with drought and resulting in increased mortality rates. The study also found that defoliation, relative water content, and starch concentration were predictors of mortality under both drought and pathogen infection.

Emerging stability of forest productivity by mixing two species buffers temperature destabilizing effect

Miren del Rio et al.

Summary: The increasing disturbances in monocultures around the world have led to a growing demand for species mixing. This study analyzed forest data from a wide range of climate conditions in Europe and found that mixing species can significantly increase both the level and stability of stand growth. Temperature was identified as a key factor destabilizing stand growth, which can be mitigated by species mixing. Asynchrony between species was confirmed as the main driver of temporal stability in mixed stands.

With increasing site quality asymmetric competition and mortality reduces Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stand structuring across Europe

Hans Pretzsch et al.

Summary: The study found that the stand structure becomes more homogeneous with increasing site quality, with the asymmetry of competition and growth distribution increasing with higher site index. Mortality mainly eliminates small trees with increasing site index, reducing size variation and structural heterogeneity.

The greater resilience of mixed forests to drought mainly depends on their composition: Analysis along a climate gradient across Europe

M. Pardos et al.

Summary: The study found that mixed stands generally exhibited higher resistance, resilience, and relative resilience to drought events than monospecific stands. However, the beneficial effect of mixtures varied depending on the type of admixture and tree species identity, and was influenced by site water supply and stand characteristics.

The Kroof experiment: realization and efficacy of a recurrent drought experiment plus recovery in a beech/spruce forest

Thorsten E. E. Grams et al.

Summary: Researchers conducted a throughfall exclusion experiment to study the impact of extreme drought on mature forest trees. The findings showed that drought led to reduced tree growth and fine root abundance, as well as changes in mycorrhizal community composition. Careful watering can quickly restore the water status of drought-stressed trees, but growth recovery remains slow.

A Direct Measure of Stand Density Based on Stand Growth

Thomas J. Dean et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the sum of ratios between individual tree volume increment and height increment is a direct measure of stand density, related to canopy structure and resource use. Results show that advanced statistical techniques can provide more precise tools for managing stand density indices, but data from self-thinning stands are necessary, and assumptions about constant fractions of relative stand density parallel to self-thinning trajectories must be made.
