Multimodal correlative imaging and modelling of phosphorus uptake from soil by hyphae of mycorrhizal fungi

Sam Keyes et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is essential for plant growth, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play a role in its uptake. This study used synchrotron X-ray technology to investigate AMF colonization and phosphorus uptake. The results showed that AMF co-located with high phosphorus and low aluminum areas and preferred organic-type phosphorus species. By modeling, the estimated phosphorus uptake rate by AMF hyphae was an order of magnitude lower than previously estimated.

SuRVoS 2: Accelerating Annotation and Segmentation for Large Volumetric Bioimage Workflows Across Modalities and Scales

Avery Pennington et al.

Summary: As sample preparation and imaging techniques improve, the bottleneck in volumetric imaging has shifted to data analysis. The updated SuRVoS application provides access to manual and machine learning-based segmentation and annotation techniques, and supports crowd-sourced data. By combining adjacent voxels and utilizing layers, segmentation can be accelerated and multiple datasets can be annotated together. With server support and Pytorch technology, handling larger data becomes more flexible and efficient.

The soluble lead flow battery: Image-based modelling of porous carbon electrodes

E. J. Fraser et al.

Summary: A novel numerical modelling framework is developed to simulate the behavior of soluble lead flow battery with reticulated vitreous carbon (RVC) electrodes. The model is validated with experimental results. The study also presents a method to estimate the geometry of RVC electrodes with different thicknesses of electrodeposited material. The model predicts the effects of different electrolyte regions on the behavior of the battery and shows that using 100 ppi RVC electrodes can improve the voltage efficiency.
