The mutual crosstalk between iron and erythropoiesis

Clara Camaschella et al.

Summary: Iron homeostasis and erythropoiesis are closely linked, with iron being essential for hemoglobin production in erythropoiesis. Erythropoiesis can also increase iron absorption and suppress hepcidin expression through the production of erythroferrone. The regulation of erythropoietin production is modulated by iron as well. Imbalances in erythropoiesis and iron/hepcidin control can lead to anemia.

Intermittent scavenging of storage lesion from stored red blood cells by electrospun nanofibrous sheets enhances their quality and shelf-life

Subhashini Pandey et al.

Summary: Transfusion of healthy red blood cells is vital for saving lives, but the storage of these cells can generate damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), which decrease the quality and shelf-life of stored red blood cells. Researchers have developed electrospun nanofibrous sheets containing taurine and acridine to scavenge DAMPs from stored red blood cells. Intermittent removal of DAMPs improves the membrane integrity and deformability of stored red blood cells. Transfusion studies in mice show that intermittent removal of DAMPs enhances the quality and extends the shelf-life of stored red blood cells by approximately 22%. This prophylactic technology has significant implications for reducing transfusion-related adverse effects.

Donor sex, age and ethnicity impact stored red blood cell antioxidant metabolism through mechanisms in part explained by glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase levels and activity

Angelo D. Alessandro et al.

Summary: Storage of red blood cells in the blood bank leads to metabolic alterations that affect their ability to resist oxidative stress, with donor characteristics such as sex, age, ethnicity, additive solution type, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase status influencing the metabolism and susceptibility to hemolysis of stored erythrocytes following oxidative insults. Metabolomic markers of hemolysis and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency were identified, revealing dysregulation in detoxification pathways of oxidized lipids in extreme oxidative hemolysis.

Testosterone replacement therapy in blood donors modulates erythrocyte metabolism and susceptibility to hemolysis in cold storage

Keisha Alexander et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in metabolism and hemolysis susceptibility in stored red blood cells from patients receiving testosterone replacement therapy, showing higher antioxidant pathway activation and enhanced hemolysis susceptibility.

Anemia in older adults as a geriatric syndrome: A review

Akira Katsumi et al.

Summary: Anemia is a common condition in older patients, significantly associated with advanced age and male sex. It can lead to negative outcomes such as falls and frailty, but the effectiveness of anemia treatment remains controversial. Further research is needed to evaluate the causes and benefits of treatment in older adults.

Using redox potential as a feasible marker for banked blood quality and the state of oxidative stress in stored red blood cells

Rodney C. Daniels et al.

Summary: Stored red blood cells undergo oxidative stress over time, leading to increased oxidation as cells age. However, storage time alone is not sufficient to predict the measured RP in a particular unit or segment. RP screening may be an important measure of RBC oxidative stress and quality marker.

Multiple-ancestry genome-wide association study identifies 27 loci associated with measures of hemolysis following blood storage

Grier P. Page et al.

Summary: Genome-wide association study identified genetic variants in erythrocyte structural and functional genes that influence hemolytic stress during transfusion and disease. These variants may impact erythrocyte recovery after transfusion and modulate disease severity in hemolytic diseases such as sickle cell disease and malaria.
